Born of a mixed heritage, brought up in several countries, and finally becoming the 44 th president of the United States, his is a lifetime story that surpasses most peoples ideology of a life well lived. And through it all, his personal involvement, his personal drive and ambitions, shines like a beacon, driving him through the innumerable hurdles along the way. It is the epitome of American success a life lived with the ultimate belief that nothing is impossible, and that the sky is actually below the limit for the determined individual. From a livelihood of relative obscurity, Barack Obama has fought the odds to become the most powerful person in the free world (Al, 2008). This paper narrates his background, his almost unearthly achievements, and his glorious vision for the American dream.

Formative years Barack Obama was born in 1961 to Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Stanley Ann hailed from a family of mainly English descent in Wichita, Kansas. Barack Obama Sr, on the other hand, was a Luo from the Kenyan province of Nyanza. The parents got married in 1961, and Barack Obama was born later in the same year.

But in 1962, the parents separated, and a divorce followed in 1964. Barrack Obama sr. died in 1981, having met Barack Obama only once more. Ann Dunham later got married to an Indonesian called Lolo Soetoro, and a presidential recall of all Indonesian living abroad forced them to move back to Indonesia. There, Barrack Obama attended several schools in Jakarta (Whitehouse, N. D. ).

Barack Obama later moved back to Hawaii, where the maternal grandparents still resided. There, in an environment of mutual respect for all racial origins, he was able to fully consider his unique family background. His Kenyan father had been typically black, while his mother had been white. This had conferred upon him a mixed race appearance, and it used to be a prominent issue in his high school and college years. According to his book, Dreams from my father, sometimes this issue would get so disturbing that at one point, he broke down and started using drugs cocaine and marijuana. Much later, he kicked the drug habit, but wasnt able to kick the cigarette smoking habit.

But one of his resolve upon becoming the US president in 2009 was that he would quit smoking for good (Wikipedia, N. D. ). Personal achievements Barrack Obama's achievements are awe inspiring. One of his biggest achievements is related to his racial origins.

Before his historic rise to the president, there used to be a stereotype within America that looked down upon all minority groups. Barack Obama has successfully dispelled that stereotype, and now everyone in America can have a greater confident in the strife for equality and liberty for every citizen. Barack Obama proved, once for all, that from the dark ages of slavery and racial discrimination, America has matured enough to fit Martin Luther Kings proclamation that each man be judged not from his appearance, but from the quality of his character. Now, more than ever before, all previously nondescript personalities can dream of a glorious future in America, where personal worth is judged upon merit, not background (Al, N. D. ). Academic achievements But Barrack Obama's achievements are not merely philosophical.

There are literally numerous practical hurdles that he has surmounted along the way to the most powerful post in America. In 1981, after the college years, Barack Obama joined the Columbia University, New York, where he specialized in Political Science with a main leaning towards International Relations. He graduated with a BA in 1983 (Rio, 2008). During the next few years, he was employed in various law firms and corporations, in which his exemplary performances were always noted. But it was in 1990 that he began to achieve really unprecedented feats. After joining Harvard Law School in 1988, Barack Obama became the first African-American editor to the Harvard Law Review.

In his second year within the college, he became the president of the journal, another milestone for the African-American. This unprecedented feat got him national media attention, and led to his getting a publishing contract in which he was supposed to produce a book on race relations. The contract evolved into his first book, Dreams from my father, which was actually a personal memoir. This carefully written book on his life story was published in Mid- 1995. It comprehensively covered all issues about race and inheritance, from Obama's viewpoint, and provided a base by which he could later be scrutinized especially during his presidential bids (Wikipedia, N. D. ).

Project vote In 1992, Barack Obama once again caught public attention when he led a workforce of ten and another 700 volunteers in a drive called Project Vote. In this drive, Barack targeted at registering 150, 000 out of the total 400, 000 unregistered African-Americans within the state of Illinois. He accomplished this feat, and this led to his being included in the 1993 s Crains Chicago Business of 40 under 40 powers to be (Wikipedia, N. D. ). It was a formal recognition of the great social influence that Obama was starting to amass within the state. Between 1992 and 2004, Obama was a professor at the Chicago Law University, having started as a lecturer and then being promoted to the status of a senior lecturer in 1996.

He also got associated with an attorney law firm that specialized in civil rights and neighborhood economic development, starting as an associate and ending up as counsel. He was also a founding member of Public Allies, which was formed in 1992 (Wikipedia, N. D). Political career Barrack Obama's political career formally started in 1996, when he was elected into the Illinois state senate. His achievements during the next two years led to his being reelected in 1998, and again in 2002 (Rio, 2008).

Throughout, Obama was noted for his contribution to the reform of ethics and health care laws. He was especially compassionate to the underprivileged in the society, for whom he pushed for tax credits, welfare reforms and subsidiaries at the childcare centers. He also played a key role in the renegotiation's of the loan pay day regulations and predatory mortgages which before had led to many home foreclosures. 2004 marked yet another milestone in Obama's career, for it was then that he got elected into the US senate (Rio, 2008). His campaign trail towards this senate position got wide acclaim for his active support of death penalty reforms. Many police representatives gave him official recognition because of this, further casting his image into the national scene. When he got the US senate position he resigned from the position of Illinois senate.

As a senator of the US, he created national sensations with his key note addresses, whereby he would deliver his vision for a reformed American governing and economical system, and even challenged the George Bush administration on several fronts. He was particularly critical of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, in which George Bush's treatment of the loyal American Solders was found wanting (Wikipedia, N. D). Obama's rise into the senate position was unique on several fronts. For one, it was one amongst the only five African-American rise into a senate position in the entire American history. Secondly, Obama was one of only three African-Americans who got the senate position by popular vote.

Subsequent analysis of his style of leadership and vision also categorized him as one of the most liberal senators in American history. By 2008, Obama was ranked as the most popular senator, having a supportive backing of 72 % of the Illinois populace (Rio, 2008). Other achievements There were some other achievements interspersed within the main political achievements along the way. For example, in both 2005 and 2007, Barrack Obama was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The New Statesman Magazine named Obama amongst the 10 top people who would change the world in 2005.

In 2006, after the release of the CD version of Dreams from my father, Obama won the Grammy Award for the best spoken word. He won the award once again in 2008 for the CD version of his second book, Audacity of hope (Rio, 2008). These latter achievements, while not directly linked to his political career, show that Obama is a well rounded person, with capabilities in various other areas quite apart from politics. Bid for presidency In 2007, Barack Obama finally announced his interest in running for the president of United States. This announcement was made in Old State Capitol building, Illinois, a location symbolic for the fact that Abraham Lincoln had also made his famous House divided speech there in 1858. Thereafter, a hectic campaign trail followed that lasted right up to the end of 2008, when the general elections were done.

Barack Obama won the elections, becoming the first African-American president-in-waiting. In January 20, 2009, he was inaugurated into the President of the United States, becoming the 44 th President (Wikipedia, N. D. ). As a president, Barack Obama has continued with his trail-blazing ways, overhauling long-held customs and paradigms, and basically redefining American politics.

Within a few days into the presidency, he had already reversed American policies regarding the Iraq war, which had previously marred American image within the international circles. He also significantly reduced the amount of secrecy conventionally given to presidential records. He also issued orders to have the Guantanamo prison closed as soon as possible. Most of these actions were a direct fulfillment of his campaign pledges.

He has also signed into effect a huge stimulus package to revive the ailing economy. Early signs show that the package is having a small, but noticeable, positive effect on the economy. There is hope that the American recession has bottomed out, thanks to the bold moves of Barack Obama. Conclusion With all the achievements under his belt, Barack Obama has incredibly retained his humble veneer. He is still the loving family man that he was years ago, as seen in all the media captions of him and his wife and the two daughters. He still attends his gym sessions and occasional basket ball games.

He can still communicate with the common man on the street on a level base. These capabilities are perhaps more incredible than all the other achievements of the man. They show that despite his demonstrated stratospheric potentials and prospects, he still hasnt lost touch with reality, and with the myriad problems that continue to plague the common folk within the United States. The American citizen, looking at all this, can rest assured that finally, a person who comes the closest to fitting the ideal of a national leader is in office.
