Running head: ADVANTAGES OF RFID CHIP Advantages of RFID chip April 15, 2009 Advantages of RFID chip Starting in 2006, the U. S. Department of State has decided to introduce a new security feature, offering passports and other documentation to have a computer chip with imbedded ID holder personal information. According to their opinion, this RFID (radio-frequency identification) chip serves as a good alternative to previous ID identification strategies. Although there are a lot of opponents of using RFID chips in licenses and IDs, there are many benefits of using RFID chips offering a really smart alternative to intrusive questioning in airports.

RFID is a small computer chip, which is connected to antennae that can be implanted within various objects (in this case, in passports or student ID cards). The use of RFID technology in new U. S. passports obviously facilitates travel at the points of entry on the borders. For example, DHS is currently testing this technology at borders through US-VISIT. Under this trusted traveler program, the individuals who have the new U.

S. passport with implanted RFID chip will be able to pass the borders easily without the necessity to spend endless hours in queues. According to the information obtained from the company, US-VISIT has issued more than 459, 000 RF-enabled I- 94 s, the standard arrival and departure record issued at ports of entry, making travelling easier (Fact Sheet: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) Passport Card Technology Choice: Vicinity RFID, 2006). Another great advantage of using RFID chips in passports and ID cards is that implanting RFID chips provides a security benefit. As RFID information can be scanned and read very fast, the officers at check points, for example, will be able to read the identification information of the travelers and tourists very quickly. In addition, the information can be quickly compared to the terrorist watch list, thus allowing the officers to find out suspicious individuals immediately, reducing the risk of terrorist attack to the lowest possible minimum.

As far as the ID cards with implanted RFID chips can be read at a significant distance, buses and vehicles with individuals having new U. S. passports can be processed at once quickly. In addition, the use of RFID ensures safe protection of the cardholder information. For example, to avoid transmitting the RFID signal the cards are equipped with a special protective sleeve, preventing transmission of the signal. Also, RFID technology has a lot of benefits for use in student identification cards.

RFID Student IDs with sophisticated RFID technology increase campus security and at the same time, provide cardholders with convenient functionality. With this card, students waive near a special card reader or tap ID card to gain access to campus or buildings inside the campus territory. As far as card readers contain no sensitive and easy-to-destroy parts, they can be easily placed outside the buildings with no fear of being damaged by students. Some universities (such as University of Chicago) already use this technology (U of C to revamp student ID cards, 2008). For example, in University of Chicago the card contains an identifying ISO number, and a Chicago ID number that serves as the University's placeholder for a student's social security number, a library barcode, a student ID number and other information (University of Chicago Introduces RFID Student IDs, 2009). In such a way, the student has no need to carry a bunch of documents as he can easily use only one small card that has all information he needs.
