Types of Students (1) There are different types of students classification that correspond to the various aspects of educational process. The commonly accepted classification of students makes it easier for the educators to address their needs and helps to increase the effectiveness of academic process. It also needs to be said that the system of students classification cannot be viewed as the hierarchical structure, which does not have an overlapping components. Therefore, every individual case requires its own approach, when it comes to defining the principles that allow us to categorize students.
The most basic classification of students is based on the notion of seniority. There are high school students, college students and university students. Each category can be additionally sub-divided. Such sub-division corresponds to the pace of educational progress, which incorporates time as dependent variable. Every student can be referred to as freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.
Students pursue their studies on full-time or part-time basis, although some consider distant learning students and former students as independent sub-categories. High school students attend high school. The academic requirements, in regards to this type of students, can be referred to as somewhat relaxed. Students are expected to obtain a basic knowledge of scientific disciplines, such as math, geography, history and literature, which is going to come in handy if they decide to continue their studies in college or university. In addition, these students are expected to have understanding of the mechanics of abstract thinking. In order for a high student to graduate, she of he will have to prove its ability to think of studying process as the foremost priority.
High school is also the place where students obtain social skills and learn how to behave in socially appropriate manner. By the time they graduate from high school, students are being referred to as such that are capable of using their own judgment, when it comes to dealing with life challenges. (2) College students learn how to apply an obtained knowledge, within the context of careers they choose. It is usually been assumed that they do not intend to pursue with their studies, after they graduate from college. The main reason for them to apply to enter the college, in the first place, is to become professionals in their particular field of interest.
This is why it is very important that these students understand the practical implications of their theoretical knowledge, by the time they graduate. The field practice, which college students are required to undergo, before they can receive their diplomas, is meant to test their ability to apply their skills in professional environment. The academic requirements, in regards to university students, are considerably higher. It is not that they are being simply required to excel in their studies, but they are also expected to enjoy the educational process as such that has value in itself. In order to be admitted to study in university, candidates need to pass the entrance exams, which are being designed to root out the applicants with low IQ. This is because university students are expected to represent the nations elite in making, during the course of their studies.
It is no longer possible for university students to graduate only because they do not miss lectures and present their homework on time, even though these are the essential components of academic success fulness. These students need to prove that university is a place where they truly belong, which can only be possible if they are mentally inclined towards studying. Thus, we can conclude that classification of students is meant to provide teachers with the insight on proper educational techniques, which are to be applied in schools, colleges and universities. The process of studying can only be effective if it utilizes an individual approach to every type of students, as such that is associated with different aspects of gaining new knowledge.
