Feminism (1) Even though that there are many definitions of feminism, this term is being mostly used within the context of biology. In other words, feminism is nothing but a political movement, which is based on the notion psychological inadequacy as its metaphysical foundation. Every person, along with the social rights and responsibilities, also has biological functions to perform. However, some people feel that their gender affiliation does not correspond to their essence as human beings. In its turn, this creates a productive ground for the appearance of different socio-political philosophies that promote sexual inadequacy as the normal way of life. Feminism is one of them.

There can be no doubts that Olga Broumas poem Little Red Riding Hood contains numerous feminist motives. The most important of them is authors unwillingness to think of herself as the part of society. The absolutely natural process of childbirth Broumas associates with pain and suffering and, in her own mind, it gives her a valid reason to state that she is not going to follow the footsteps of her mother, in social context of this word. In other words, Broumas proclaims that she will never conceive a child and she is being very proud of this: I grow old, old without you, Mother, landscape of my heart. No child, no daughter between my bones has moved, and passed out screaming, dressed in her mantle of blood This is a classical feminist apology for taking anti-social stance in life.

Without the childbirth, there can be no society and without society, there can be no civilization. However, the considerations of higher good are alien to Broumas. She prefers to focus on her irrational feelings as such have foremost importance. Feminism is nothing but the philosophy of womens social egoism. Broumas proves the validity of this statement with claims she is making in her poem.

Author admits that she has a hard time trying to fit into society, because she associates it with the threat to her identity. At the same time, Broumas thinks of her deviation as something that needs to be promoted. Broumas actually feels sorry for the traditional women, who had found their happiness in being married and having children: Across this improbable forest peopled with wolves and our lost, flower-gathering sisters they feed on It is clear that author extrapolates her subconscious fears and anxiety onto the world. The hairy and vicious wolf for Broumas is an embodiment of a man. We can argue long and hard, as to what had actually triggered authors psychological inadequacy; however, there can be no doubt that Broumas vision of the world is distorted by her affiliation with feminism. She thinks with aversion of just about anything that people commonly associate with female virtues.

Thus, even though Broumas is being commonly referred to as feminist, there are some valid grounds to suspect of whether she is a woman, in the first place. Just like every feminist, Broumas has a short haircut, likes to wear mens shirts and cannot stand the sight of skirts. This portrays her as person with anti-social attitudes. In fact, Broumas actually admits of being little off in her poem: High forceps might in that one instant, have accomplished what you and that good woman failed in all these years to do: cramp me between the temples, hobble my baby feet Critics often point out to this passage as the proof of Broumas homosexuality, because it appears that author talks about the fact of her inability to stay within the boundaries of socially accepted morality as such that has determinist properties. In other words, it might very well be the case that the reason why Broumas became feminist is that she was born lesbian. Author relates psychological comfort to the possibilities of self-expression.

However, only other special women can fully appreciate Broumas as individual. I opened it only at night, and with other women says author, which again give us a valid reasons to think of her as lesbian, on the path of enlightening the humanity about the evils of sexism and male chauvinism. (2) It could not escape readers attention that author talks about sexual desire as such that derives out of mans unconsciousness. She associates it with instinctive impulses that have a physiological nature. At the same time, she keeps mentioning wolves, as physical sublimation of these instincts, with great persistency. This allows us to conclude that Broumas is attracted to sensuality, which in its turn, suggests that she might not be a feminist after all, even though she considers herself as such.

Despite the fact that Broumas thinks of mans sexuality as something politically incorrect, she nevertheless fantasizes about it, because the image of wolves is clearly Freudian. Thus, we can say that, even though Little Red Riding Hood is being commonly referred to as the apology of feminism, it can also serve as something that point out at logical inconsistencies, within feminism. For men, sexual desire can be compared to the rush, which comes and goes, while for women, sexuality is an essential part of their being. This is reason why even intelligent women like watching soap operas, because in soap operas, everything revolves around sex. Therefore, feminist theories that entitle women with self-efficiency are wrong, as normal sexual activity, on the part of women, is impossible without men.

The reason why Broumas is opposed to feminine virtues is that they have a submissive essence. At the same time, these virtues are not altogether alien to author. It creates a psychological conflict, when Broumas cannot relate to her own ideas, regarding feminism, on subconscious level. In fact, this is the main psychological trait of majority of feminists they associate penis with fear, while being emotionally attracted to it. There are a few passages in the poem that can be interpreted as indications of Broumas feminism having an artificial nature.

Throughout her work, author never gets tired of suggesting that she always tried to keep her identity well hidden: I kept to the road, kept the hood secret, kept what it sheathed more secret still It might very well be the case that author refers to conventional sexuality as such that is actually natural to her, without admitting it openly. If it is a fact, then we could say that Little Red Riding Hood contains anti-feminist motives. The dark and irrational force of male sexuality is being linked by the author to both danger and pleasure, which reveals Broumas as regular housewife, who simply has a little too much time on her hands. Broumas utilized feminism as something that prevents her from getting bored, rather then something that helps her to realize her potential as individual. We can respect Broumas unwillingness to have her body exploited as childbearing machine.

Nevertheless, the reason why she implies negative connotation, when it comes to discussing childbirth, is that she probably never experienced a true love. This again undermines the validity of authors social stance. Feminists separate sex from love and when they do it, the sexual activity appears to them as the form of womens physical exploitation. Thus, it is possible to find many feminist motives in Broumas poem, while we can also say the same about anti-feminist ideas. Even though author clearly associates herself with feminism, it does not come naturally to her.
