POLLUTION IN MANHATTAN NEW YORK Abstract There are numerous efforts in New York City in protecting their environment. Measures are being creatively designed with innovation by applying latest technologies to address the immediate needs of protecting the environment. Strategies are continuously developed, modified or revised to suit the compelling needs demanded of time. What could be done, though, is to use more measures to keep the pollution in check as well as to provide more advanced equipment and tools that are less environmentally-invasive. Putting the same kind of constraints can eventually restrict their growth. Introduction A number of extreme proposals for regulating pollution emissions have been made because many policymakers must understand the basic physical and economic aspects of pollution control.

For example, some conservation groups advocate that all pollutants be removed from the air and that all emission of pollutants be prohibited. However, many pollutants are natural constituents of air. Plants, animals and natural activity sometimes would cause some pollution even without man and his technology. Air pollution Despite the governments attempt to blame trees, acid rain, for instance, is a problem created by human activity and it is already having a significant effect on our resource-based economy. Unless emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are dramatically reduced in this community, the figures will continue to rise.

The technology needed to clean up emissions substantially at their sources already exists. Low sulphur coal could be immediately introduced in coal-burning power plants; scrubbers could be installed in power plants to reduce the sulphur content of emissions; vehicles with better pollution control could be engineered. The impediments to such controls are economic and political. Some of the acid rain that can fall on this place is caused by the pollution. Therefore, any efforts to clean up have to be directed to the government and industries surrounding this. The community needs to set up emissions standards.

The problem here is that there are heat-trapping gases released into the atmosphere, including many other forms of air pollutants in sufficient concentrations such that it is able to change the composition of the atmosphere. The Lower Manhattan Construction Center (LMCCC) is now directing the BEM Systems, Inc. (BEM) to work on the air quality monitoring program (AQMP) in Lower Manhattan. This is just part of the overall environmental program which is implemented to minimize the environmental impacts which are connected with the redevelopment and reconstruction of Lower Manhattan (LMCCC Air Quality Monitoring Program). This consists of four air monitoring stations which are found throughout Lower Manhattan. Each of this contains two monitors which regulate particles coming from diesel exhaust, fossil fuels, construction sites and other particle pollution. These will be monitored because they are directly linked to several health problems. (LMCCC Air Quality Monitoring Program).

Water pollution Water pollution happens when there is a leaching to groundwater. The sewage and fertilizers contain nutrients but which in excess levels are also not good for plants and algae. When these organisms proliferate, then these can clog the waterway systems; block the light to deeper waters, which eventually proves harmful to the aquatic organisms (Krantz). After heavy rainstorms, there is a need to monitor the flow of waste water in the sewers since it has been found out that waste water exceeds the treatment capacity of the sewage treatment. The money will also be used to look for alternatives to the construction of retention tanks (The New York City Municipal Water Finance Authority). On my end, one way of reducing water pollution in my community is by doing some digging myself.

For instance, I can find out if there are companies in my area that are polluting waterways. I could start by contacting the local officials and express to them my concerns and find out which environment group in my area is working on issues of water quality. I will joining and support these groups that lobby for a Safe Drinking water with legally enforceable standards. I can also find out about toxic contamination of the local water supplies. Another way is to take the initiative at a local level.

I could try to get a local club involved and organize an event around a litter pick-up. Groundwater contamination is tied to many environmental issues including acid rain, garbage disposal, forestry practices, toxic spills and chemicals in agriculture and gardening. Moreover, drinking water may be contaminated by the lead solder used by many plumbers and by old lead pipes in my house or in the citys water system. If I become worried about lead in my drinking water, there are two ways to reduce the exposure immediately. First, I must not use water from the hot water tap for drinking or cooking. Hot water is a more efficient solvent than cold water, and draws more lead from the pipes and solder.

Second, I can let the cold water tap run for at least a minute before using the water first thing in the morning. This will flush out water that has been sitting in the pipes overnight. Conclusion As individuals and as a society, we have become alienated from nature. When environmental problems come knocking on our own doors and showing yp on our daily menu of news, we have started realizing that our community is in rough shape. Manhattan is no exception to that.

Still, most of us have not made the connection between what we see and read about and our own daily lives. Humans are only part of the natural chain of life, yet we have tried to divide and conquer the other links. It is time to realize that the key to our survival on planet earth is to preserve and protect planet earth. REFERENCES Krantz, D.
