Race and Your Community (1) I live in New Haven, Connecticut. I am African-American. The answer to the first question depends on how we view the word community. The area in New Haven, where I was born and raised is now being commonly referred to as hood. It is populated almost exclusively by Black Americans; therefore, we can say that the racial homogeneity, within the hood is high. Thus, the answer to the first question will be positive, if we think of community as something that is being defined by ethnic affiliation alone.

However, I personally do not think that it is a good idea to indulge into racial secularism, disguised as celebration of diversity. This is why, my view of the community is somewhat larger and it includes representatives of other minority groups, as well as White people. At the same time, I am fully aware that, in order to be respected by others, Black Americans need to maintain a racial solidarity among themselves. (2) The leaders of New Havens Black community can be characterized as careerists. They like to engage in pro-Black rhetoric, in order to gain a popular support in the hood. During the time of elections, our leaders do spend time with ordinary people, while trying to pose as self-made men, for whom defending the interests of African-Americans is the foremost priority. At this time, our leaders view us as equal.

However, once they gain a political prominence, they often forget about the people who elected them. In fact, many of them move out of ghetto, because they prefer to live in White suburbia. Their attitude also changes, because many of them grow ignorant of subtle racism that Black people experience on everyday basis. I cannot say that the attitude of our leaders towards people of other ethnic affiliation depends on the color of their skin.

It actually depends on the content of their wallets. For example, about 70 % of convenience stores in the hood are owned by Chinese, who only hire their own compatriots, while depriving Black people of the chance to get a job in their stores. This creates a racial hostility between Chinese and Blacks, however, our leaders do not think that there is anything wrong about this situation. (3) There is no doubt that brothers in our community treat each other as equal. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Whites and Hispanics, when they deal with African-Americans.

For them, we are always going to be inferior, because their racist attitude towards a Black man has nothing to do with how they were being brought up it is in their blood. We can deny this all we want, but it is a fact. It is very ironic that many Black Americans actually respect White racists more than they actually respect their Liberal counterparts, because these racists have the integrity of expressing their views openly, while politically-correct yuppies only have the courage to express their racism, when there are no Blacks around. It is best for the Whites and Hispanics not to show up in the hood, especially after it gets dark, for the sake of their own safety. At the same time, brothers will respect individual, regardless of the color of his skin, for as long as he knows how stand his ground. The only reason why Black Americans are gaining more and more special privileges over others is that our history taught us solidarity.

Whites obviously do not have it, but it is not our problem. (4) There is no doubt that my text manuals contain information about people like me. The funny thing is that most of these manuals are written by White Liberals who strive to instill African-Americans with a sense of self-pride. However, they do not understand that we do not need this kind of favor, on their part. Malcolm X once said that civil rights are not being given they are being taken.

This is exactly what we do, without having to wait until the decedents of slave owners will give us more freedoms. My text manuals contain a lot of useless rhetoric about how it is important to respect racial differences etc. However, person cannot be taught of these things while reading a book. It is only on the street that individual learn how to respect others, but they would have to be worthy of it. (5) Our local Medias do a fairly good job representing people like me. In New Haven alone, there are three TV channels, which are meant to appeal to the tastes of Blacks. We also have a few newspapers that focus on covering the events that take place within Black community.

Nevertheless, in my opinion, all of them exploit entertainment more then anything else, in order to attract the attention of Black audience. The educated Black person can find very little information that matters in these newspapers, which actually look like cheap tabloids. Connecticut's mainstream Medias often focus on covering the negative aspects of Black community's living. Every day we get to hear about shootings and drug related violence and the news anchors never miss the chance to mention that black male was being spotted at the scene. This only adds to maintaining a negative image of Africa-Americans, which is nothing but another example of institutionalized racism. (6) As I had mentioned earlier, the only difference between the leaders of my community and me is the fact that we belong to different social classes. Most of the leaders in my community are Black, but the more riches they acquire, the more they tend to act as White people.

This, of course, is nothing but a slap in the face of those Black folks who elected them. I think that the interests of minority groups in my community are not just being adequately represented, but grossly overrepresented. For example, the name of the streets are also written in Spanish, beneath the English text. As far as I remember, English is still the official language in U. S. , therefore the local initiatives of politically correct zealots are actually anti-constitutional. We already have 12 million illegal Mexicans in this country, who take jobs away from people like me, so let us encourage even more of them to come and to exploit this country! (7) If I was able to resolve the inequities within my community, I would introduce the policy of providing an affordable housing to a poor Black families.

As practice shows, these families are having a hard time meeting the ends, with little children often starving. At the same time, our government wastes millions of dollars every year on combating the worlds hunger, while the gap between rich and poor in our own country is widening rapidly. It is simply impossible for the hard working Black person to even dream of one day having a house of his own, unless he is a highly paid lawyer, or drug dealer. This is actually the reason why many kids become involved in drug trafficking they simply do not see any perspective in their lives. (8) There are deep inconsistencies can be found within a textbook. On one hand, we are being told that racial affiliation does not define the essence of individual, on the other we are being encouraged to celebrate diversity. This points out to the fact that this textbook is being written by a typical Liberal, whose sense of logic is irrational.

I believe that race does matter, but this does not mean that Hispanics, Chinese and Whites can use their racial affiliation as something that allows them to get special privileges. It is different with Black people, because our ancestors were being used as slaves. Therefore, it is moral, on our part, to demand compensation. However, the newly arrived immigrants from Third world countries need to learn English language at least, before heading out to welfare office.
