Letter to Congressional Representative Dear Mr. Shays, As Connecticut's Congressional representative from Fourth district, you have a power to influence a decision-making, on the part of Federal Government, in regards to the issue of Global Warming. Even though that this problem has rather global implications, it is also a fact that people of Connecticut have already began to suffer from unusually high summer temperatures. It is estimated that in last summer the average temperatures in Connecticut were 1 - 2 degree higher then 2 years ago. The most alarming thing about is that such tendency appears to be getting momentum. It is a common knowledge that so-called green house effect is behind Earth atmosphere getting heated up.
In its turn, it is caused by the emissions of CO 2 into the air. Connecticut is one of the most industrialized states in America; therefore, its share in polluting our air is substantial, despite States actual size. As U. S.
Congressman, I believe you need to pay more attention to dealing with global issues that affect our State in immediate manner. You are known for your association with Bible thumper's, who believe that everything is in the hands of God; therefore, it is pointless to strive to improve the ecological situation in this country. However, you must also understand that to count of Cods miraculous involvement, when it comes to dealing with environmental issues, is naive. It because of Congressmen such as you that United States resist signing Kyoto protocol, which is meant to at least slow down the process of Global warming. Republicans like to talk a lot about protecting the environment, but it is not the same than applying an actual effort to change the environmental situation for better. In 2005, Connecticut Fund for the Environment reported the New Haven and Waterbury are included in the list of fifty Americas cities, where the high level of CO 2 emissions into the air represents immediate danger to citizens health.
According to Funds CFE, CCA Release Diesel Report: In New Haven, ambient air levels reached unhealthy levels from 152 to 187 days each year from 1998 to 2002. In Waterbury, the air reached the unhealthy air levels between 154 and 172 days each year from 2000 to 2002 (CFE). As a citizen, I am greatly concerned about the smog that can be seen over Waterbury, Hartford and New Haven on hot summer days, because this is exactly what causes Global warming. We cannot talk about this as something that will only affect future generations in the distant future.
It is a fact that, during the rush hour, many people in these cities are having hard time breathing and we talk about ordinary folks, who do not have respiratory problems. The hot summer weather creates a shortage of drinking water in such cities as Meriden and Wallingford. Thus, it is not too hard to foresee that Connecticut might lose its appeal of a State with highest standards of living in very near future, because more and more people are going to find it not fit to live in. It is understood that the problem of Global warming cannot be effectively dealt with on the level of State legislative initiatives.
However, it is your duty as Congressional representative, to speak for the people of Connecticut, including those that did not vote for you, such as myself. Republicans cannot deny forever that there is growing concern about the issue of Global warming in Connecticut. This is why it is crucial, on your part, to begin supporting Democratic Partys ecological proposals, because it will benefit everybody in this State, even including the narrow-minded citizens that voted for Republicans. Global warming is the first universal threat to humanity, as we know it.
Therefore, it is important to understand that, in order to be able to deal with it, we need to drop our political, religious and cultural prejudices. So far, our State Government has failed to adopt a comprehensive program of how to deal with climate change. This is because the majority of Hartford's politicians simply pursue their secular agendas, as they believe that this would allow them to be reelected for the second term. It might very well be the case, however, if this trend continues, there are going to be less and less people remaining in Connecticut, over which politicians will be able exercise their authority.
