Abortion and Infanticide Abstract: This is a discussion of the difference between abortion and infanticide and whether both have the same implication in the society Abortion laws vary widely by country to country ranging from places which put total ban on the procedure to communities which places no restrictions on the provision of abortion whatsoever. Almost two-thirds of the worlds women currently reside in countries where abortion may be obtained on request, for a broad range of reasons -- - social, economic, personal or otherwise. Supporters of legal abortion believe their position addresses a fundamental human right, specifically that of the woman, the mother. Staunch supporters fight for the womens right to choose freely what they can do with their bodies. For most people, even liberals who believe that women are more than the fetuses inside their bodies, infanticide is morally unacceptable. There is a great difference between abortion and infanticide; these two are not one and the same.
The elimination of a fetus from a mothers womb is nothing but extracting an unwanted and probable harmful particle from a human body. The reason why abortion is legally accepted is primarily because of its effect on the well-being of the person primarily affected by the pregnancy. Fetuses are but 10 % of the normal human brain and thus considered as non-person while still in the womb. On the other hand, killing a baby, even though it is just but a few hours old, is another story. For one, a newly born baby does not have any harmful effect on a womans well-being. Embryos or fetuses affect and alter a womans body and health but children do not.
There is no reason for a mother to wait after a child is born before she terminates its life. Another thing, although it is very difficult to put the demarcation line between the time a non-conscious fetus turned into a conscious, feeling baby, for argument sake it is logical to say that a new born baby is already a conscious being. A newly born child is very much a person than an embryo. The destruction of a baby is akin to annihilating a person who has a right to live. Whatever the reason for an infanticide, ending a babys life has a lot of difference with the elimination of a fetus in a womans womb.
