Childhood/Family Experiences (1) When I was in junior high, there was this guy, who used to bully me. He was not much stronger, in physical sense of this word, but somehow he was always able to intimidate me to a degree that I could not put up any resistance. His name was Jason and I still remember the ignorant expression on his face, which used to make me feel being inferior, every time I talked to him. I knew that the only way to make him leave me alone was to beat him up in a fair fight. Many times, I imagined him saying something offensive to me, and then I fantasized about hitting him in the jaw, instead of walking away.

However, these fantasies never became a reality, because I always felt that he was morally stronger than I was. One time he said: I take pleasure in bullying you, because it proves to everybody that you are nothing, comparing to me, even though that your parents think of my folks as rednecks, who cannot carry on an intelligent conversation. Tell me, what is the worth of thousands of words in the moment when all that is needed is the strength of a muscle? . This question used to leave me speechless, because he was right, and the more he used to humiliate me, in front of others, the more I hated him.

One time when I was about to walk out of school, he pushed from behind with such a strength that I almost fell. At this moment, I became transformed. It was as if another side of me came into existence. All of a sudden, I became focused on only one thing - to put him down.

Without any fear whatsoever, I came up to him, punched him twice in his lower jaw with my right and left hands. This produced an unexpected effect. Jason started to back off, while loosing coordination of his movements, before he finally fell on the floor. I came closer and started kicking him in the stomach, before some of his friends pulled me away. In the next few days, Jason was not coming to school.

When he finally showed up, he came to me and said that he wanted to shake my hand. He said that I proved myself being stronger then him and told me that he wanted me to become his friend. At this point, I was still too angry with him, so I did not say anything. However, as time went by, I began to appreciate Jason more and more, as individual. One day I realized that because of him, I was able to acquire self-respect. Today, he and I are good friends and the fact that I used to hate him appears as something unbelievable to me.

If it was not up to Jason, I would still be afraid of my own shadow, which would eventually turn me into one of those whining Liberals who never get tired of repeating that violence cannot solve conflicts. Yet, the truth is that violence does solve conflicts. In fact, if any conflict between people or nations finally becomes solved, it is because of application of violence. As popular saying goes only solutions that work are drastic ones.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, Jason likes to say, when we discuss politics and I fully agree with him. Because of Jason, I came to conclusion that bullying at school is not such a bad thing as it is being portrayed now. Boys need to learn how to stand up for themselves, because this ability turns boys into men. (2) When I was a kid, I thought I would grow up to become a pilot. I always used to be fascinated with planes. Back then, our family lived close to the airport, which allowed me to observe passenger planes that were flying overhead, every time I was doing something in the backyard. One day, I felt a burning desire to build a kite.

I remember dreaming of being able to build a huge kite that would be able to sustain my weight. However, I was completely unaware of laws of aerodynamics that allow kites to soar in the sky, in the first place. A few times, I saw people flying kites on TV and it seemed that they were not putting any effort into it. Thus, I concluded that to fly a kite, I would have to find an open area and to just wait for the windy weather. It never occurred to me that, in order for the kite to become airborne, it also needs to be aerodynamically shaped. After 3 days of working in my dads garage, the kite that I named Viking- 1 was ready for the test flight.

It actually resembled a tarantula, because on each side of the carcass it had four little wings that were extended in all directions from the center. I also painted it black, because I wanted my kite to intimidate other kites in the sky. It is not to hard to imagine what happened when I tried to launch Viking. The first burst of wind simply ripped the fragile construction apart.

I still remember other kids laughing, while suggesting that I should have called my kite Craporun 1. Back then, I must have been ten, but I still remember that the fact that I wasted 3 days on building something useless was hurting me immensely. Nevertheless, I decided not to give up. It became clear to me that I would have to learn thing or two about kites, before embarking on building them.

My dad bought me some books about planes, but I could not understand what they had in common with kites. It was not before I talked to my grandpa, when I realized that the most important principle of kite modeling is simplicity. Even those kites that have whimsical forms can fly because their shapes allow them to defy the laws of gravity, for as long as the weather is windy enough. My grandpa told me that I should start with building a simple kite first.

Apparently, all I needed to assemble a kite that could actually fly was a sheet of thin plastic, six wooden planks and a roll of thick string. This time, it only took me a few hours, before I could get my kite into the air. The experience was unbelievable; it seemed if kite was soaring up in the sky on its own. All I had to do was holding up to the string. Thus, the problem was solved. I learned that the patience is success twin brother.

Today, I recall this experience, every time I face a challenge, because it tells me that if you failed for the first time, there is no reason to give up. Many people wait for the problems to solve themselves, but it rarely happens. There are three ingredients that are required for successful solution - knowledge, resolution and persistence.
