Argumentative Paper (1) In United States, many governmental initiatives, regarding the development of science, are still affected by considerations of conventional morality, which are based on obscure Christian dogma. One of the best examples of it is George W. Bush vetoing the bill, which would allow Federal financing for the human cloning research program. Republican Bible-thumper's in the Congress greeted this news with the thunderous applause, as it was seen on TV. Just like in time of Galileo Galilee, religious fanatics try to slow down the scientific progress. Moreover, what makes this situation truly grotesque is the fact that this is happening in 21 st century.

Yet, as practice shows, the scientific progress can never be effectively stopped by the mean of repressive law. In his article Human Cloning James Moore makes a perfectly good point when he says: The U. S. Congress attempts to ban cloning can be compared to an ostrich burying its head in the sand at the approach of a tiger, thinking that if it cannot see the tiger, the tiger is not there. We know the tiger is there (Moore). The self-appointed guardians of public ethics do not even want to consider a possibility that they might be wrong.

They say that scientists should not play God, even though that every educated individual do not doubt the death of God, ever since it was being proclaimed by Nietzsche. In fact, the technology of human cloning might allow people to achieve immortality and to become Gods of their own. The process of evolution continues, therefore, man is only an intermediate link between ape and super-man. Who knows, maybe the technology of human cloning will allow human race to make a new evolution jump? Cloning goes hand in hand with eugenics, which used to be a veritable science, before the advent of political-correctness. Only eugenics can insure that humankind does not succumb to biological degeneration, which might reverse the evolution progress.

In his article The Benefits of Human Cloning Simon Smith mentions the following benefits of human cloning: Human cloning technology could be used to reverse heart attacks, it can fix defective genes, it will help people dealing with infertility and it might even lead scientists to the discovery of cure for cancer (Smith). Thus, every normal person should only have a positive attitude towards human cloning. However, it appears that the influence of Bible thumper's in this country is still too strong, because many peoples low intellectual level prevents them from applying logic, when it comes to discussion of controversial topics. In their denial, they very often call the proponents of human cloning evildoers and suggest that government needs to introduce legislative acts, which would prevent scientific progress from taking its natural course.

Nevertheless, it is not a secret that Christianity has entered the era of its twilight and it would not be too daring to say that there are not going to be any people left in the world that would seriously believe in Christian nonsense by year 2100. We face paradox Christianity has long ago ceased to be a credible religious concept, yet our code of social ethics is still largely based on it. This is the core of the problem. In my opinion, uneducated people simply do not have the right to impose their outdated moral concepts onto society.

Because, otherwise, we will regress back into the Dark Ages, when burning witches was an everyday routine for the proponents of good news. These, so-called humanists would rather see real people die, than having their religious principles reconsidered. Catholic Church is also involved in this, while unwilling to spare people of its valuable opinions. I think that the Pope has more urging matters to address, such as molestation of children by Catholic priests, which is becoming more of a rule than the exception. In United States, the Church is separated from the State and it should not influence politics and science. However, it appears that this is not always the case.

I personally, cannot think of this as anything else, but the disrespect to our Constitution. Such situation cannot be tolerated, because we live in secular society, where the men of God are being subjected to the law as much as everybody else. People are entitled to have their opinions, whatever ridiculous they might be, but when it comes to making decisions, which affect millions of people, the religious fanatics need to be silenced. They should simply be forbidden from imposing their views on others. The last elections to the Senate proved that people are tired of right-wings rhetoric. They are tired of double-faced politicians, who scream bloody murder, when being asked about their opinion towards possible legalization of human cloning, while suggesting that the Americans soldiers should continue to needlessly die in Iraq.

In his article If You Believe Embryos Are Humans Michael Kinsley makes case for allowing stem cell research. However, his line of argument can be applied to human cloning as whole. He strikes Bible thumper's with their own weapon, while pointing out to their stance as unethical: If you get your way, then real, fully formed people will suffer and die for your abstract point of principle. In fact, real people will suffer and die as a result of any compromise that partly accommodates your abstract principle (Kinsley). Still, it appears to be doubtful, whether the word of reason can have any effect, under these circumstances. The self-styled experts, in the field of medicinal ethics, will do their utmost to criminalize human cloning, because their own psychological comfort means so much more to them than saving the lives of millions of people.

It is the time for political dinosaurs to realize that we do not live in fifties anymore. The socio-political situation in America has changed drastically ever since. The issue of allowing research on human cloning needs to be reviewed by the Senate and, if public support for it will prove to be strong enough, the President would not be able to use veto again, because otherwise, he will be defying the will of American people. (2) We live in time when the notion of morality rarely plays any role, when it comes to defining social policies in contemporary societies. As a result, the sanctity of human life ceased to be categorical imperative. Therefore, many people are unable to recognize dangers that are associated with scientific breakthroughs, in the field of biology.

The technology human cloning is the best example. Nowadays, we are being told that this technology can benefit it us, while more dubious aspects of human cloning, such as tampering with sanctity of human life, are not being popularized. In his article Playing God? : Facts and Thoughts on Human Cloning Joseph Candle provides us with another perspective on human cloning, which proponents of science do not want to talk about: Despite attention-grabbing headlines and photographs of Dolly the sheep and cloned cows, pigs, goats, and mice, a high percentage of animal clones are stillborn with monstrous abnormalities. Since cloned fetuses are commonly twice the size of normal ones, bloated mothers often have laborious miscarriages and occasionally die themselves. Most clones that survive at birth die before reaching maturity, or develop serious health problems later in life.

Theres no reason to believe that similar problems will not arise in the cloning of a human child (Candle). Is it justifiable to allow cloned individuals to suffer, before the technology of cloning could be perfected? Can we treat human beings as simply a genetic material that does not have a soul? Bible provides us with the answer: A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished. The naive believes everything, but the sensible man considers his steps (Proverbs 22: 3). As popular saying goes road to hell is made out of best intentions.

Many times in history, the scientific breakthroughs were being used for something opposite then benefiting humankind. Today, we are being told that the development of human cloning technology will eventually lead us to the discovery of cure for cancer. This is a very cheap trick, on the part of biologists, who try their best to insure the steady flow of money from the government. In order for them to gain a public support, they feed masses with unsubstantiated promises. Some of them even tell us that human cloning is the key to immortality. This reminds us of what happened in the Garden of Eden, what Satan convinced Eve and Adam to bite into forbidden apple, while promising that this would make them equal to Gods.

We all know what happened in the end. Despite the fact that, throughout the history, the promises of progress resulted in deaths of millions of people, they are still willing to take a chance, while playing with fire. Human cloning is a genie, which just waits to be let out of the lamp. After this happens, there is going to be no way to put her back. Matthew Herper in his article Study Highlights Dangers Of Human Cloning points out to the fact that it might take years for the genetic irregularities to become apparent in cloned organisms: Problems with gene expression may explain why cloned animals rarely survive to birth. More frighteningly, it seems that mammals can be born even when gene expression problems are significant.

That has caused scientists to worry that cloned humans would suffer from defects in their brains or immune systems that would not show up for years (Herper). Thus, when human cloning will be legalized, it might result in creation of populations of horrible mutants, just as seen in the movies. Of course, some people might think of this as a part of progress, however, the progress cannot be associated with promoting biological abnormalities. Opposing the laws of nature always results in punishment. Let us recall the story of Babylon tower. Apparently, back than, it seemed for the people that they had considered every detail of building plan, therefore, it was impossible in principle for them to fail.

However, God proved them wrong by simply mixing their languages. This is good lesson to us all. We need to think about the consequences, before we embark on pursuing illusionary goals, such as making people immortal. There is no cause in the world, which would be worthy of childs tear. The surveys show an overwhelming support of Presidents veto on human cloning, expressed by majority of Americans. They usually are being referred to as silent majority, because their stance on socio-political issues is not aggressive, however, it is solid.

Therefore, silent majority will always have a final word in the discussion of what needs to be done to bring sanity back to this country. (3) My personal position, in regards to human cloning, is not being affected by religious considerations. Throughout the centuries, religion always strived to gain credibility by showing that its notions coincide with latest scientific discoveries, and not the other way around. Today, Bible thumper's tell us that Bible actually describes a Big Bang, as the starting point of creation, even though that they keep quite about other less presentable moments found in the holy book, such as talking donkeys or sun that stands still in the sky. The truth is simple scientific progress is unstoppable and it has nothing to do with such concepts as morality or ethics. If people do not like it, it is their problem. Scientific progress is the fact of objective reality; this is why every attempt to slow it down is doomed to failure.

The sanctity of human life is nothing but a chimera. One of my favorite literary characters Wolf Larsen from Jack London's Sea Wolf talks about human life as something that only has a relative value: I held that life was a ferment, a yeasty something which devoured life that it might live, and that living was merely successful piggishness. Why, if there is anything in supply and demand, life is the cheapest thing in the world. There is only so much water, so much earth, so much air; but the life that is demanding to be born is limitless (London, Chapter 6).

Therefore, the moralizing, in regards to human cloning, can only appeal to people that are not over burdened with intellect. People evolved from animals and it is only their supreme ability to operate with abstract categories that enabled them to accomplish a complete domination over other species. Therefore, the technology of human cloning is moral, because it derives out of peoples essence as specie that can progress, in scientific and cultural sense of this word. As saying goes if you want to make an omelet, you will have to break a couple of eggs. Jesse Reynolds in his article: Human Biotechnology suggests that it is only the matter of time, before human cloning is going to be legalized, because scientists are going to convince everybody in its apparent benefits: Today, a number of respected writers, academics, and researchers are explicitly advocating the development of technologies that would set us on our way towards a new eugenics. The road to human clones and designer babies is being built not by easily dismissed sects, but by some leading bioethicist's and biotechnologist's (Reynolds).

The main fallacy of representatives of Christian right, in regards to the issue of human cloning, is the fallacy of assumption. For some very strange reason they think that, their ethical notions are equally applicable to everyone in this country. It is time for them to realize that they live in multicultural society, with people that belong to different religions. Why it is the White Christians who put themselves into position of dictating everybody else what is wrong and what is right? They are no more special then anybody else, and the sooner they understand it, the better. It is not only that the research in the field of human cloning must be allowed, but it needs to be given a priority, because nothing can be more justified than enabling scientific progress to take its natural course.

Religions come and go, but the expressions of human inquisitive spirit never lose their value. History has a spiral form. Just as in time of Dark Ages, when powerful forces strived to slow down a scientific progress, today we have politically correct Inquisition that prevents scientists from expanding their professional horizons. Nevertheless, the truth will triumph in the end, as it happened many times before. Bibliography: Candle, J.
