Despite the recent events such as the Virginia massacre and other flagrant violations of the law politicians and civilians still debate the constitutionality and efficacy of federal regulations of ammunition and firearms. What is at issue is the influence of free access to firearms on crime rate and state security. Both the advocates and supporters of gun control actively use statistics to prove their point of view. Both of them argue that ideological opponents manipulate facts and improperly quote the results of surveys. To a notable extent their proofs rest rather on ideological than on scientific arguments.
The journalists compare the opposing parties with the members of religious cults, who prefer persisting in their ideological points. Gun control issue becomes the subject of controversies. While it may be true that no law or federal regulation can be a panacea because it will somehow control the lives of law-obedient citizens, the necessity of gun control stems from the fact that the access by criminals, juveniles, and other high-risk individuals must be curbed and only federal measures can successfully reduce the availability of guns. People act both rationally and irrationally. It is impossible to predict all possible threats and to undertake all possible preventive measures.
