Hector and Achilles One of the most important episodes in Homers Iliad is the conflict between Hector and Achilles. Here, we are dealing not only with historical events, but with the reality created by Iliad. The contraposition of Hector and Achilles is not a mere conflict of two warriors. The conflict can be compared to the struggle of opposites. Hector is entirely devoted to his native land, nation and his nearest and dearest people. He is the man who was born in the fortress, protected by the safest fortification walls.

He has friendly family. He tenderly loves his family. He is the keeper of existing order. Achilles is a polarity. He lives in a military camp; he doesnt love anybody and takes no care about his relatives.

Achilles knows that his life will be short and strives to live it, leaving the memories of his brave deeds to future generations. Therefore, although he is not very interested in the destinies of Helen Troy and Merely, he takes pars in Troy war, because he prefers heroic destiny to long and inglorious life. Achilles is very punctilious in the matters of honor. It can be illustrated by the episode, where Agamemnon had taken Briseis, the woman, who belonged to Achilles as the honorary loot.

No wonder that Achilles is angry with Agamemnon. Athena manages to settle down the conflict, however, Achilles refuses to continue the war. Only the unexpected news that Patroclus was killed by Hector forces Achilles to change his mind. He gets from Hephaestus new armor and defeats Trojans. Achilles gets the victory over Hector and kills him. Finally, the revenge is done.

In contrast to Hector, Achilles is revengeful. He is devoted to no king. He has no half-brother. He has no real kinship. He has no personal constraints.

Achilles is a rolling stone. He can be compared to the wind. He can subdue the elements because he is the element himself. He is rather not a human being in a common meaning of the word.

Achilles knows that. His words are, dont talk to me of pacts. There are no binding oaths between men and lions wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds they are all bent on hating each other to the death. Achilles addresses this phrase to Hector before the battle. In the context of plotting these words gain a new context.

Hector carries a lot of scars in result of his previous battles. Achilles has no scars, because he is invulnerable. If he is covered by blood, this blood belongs to his defeated enemies. No wonder that people are afraid of Achilles. He is absolutely uncontrollable and worships nobody. He is alien.

Achilles is a single-handed man, who lives alone. The battle between Hector and Achilles is the contraposition of human and non-human. The man fights for his native land. Achilles fights just because he was born for it.

Hector has the right of choice. Achilles has no choice; he has the destiny. Everything is predetermined. The scene of the final battle is different from the entire Iliad. Hector has to choose whether to fight or not. His parents are waiting for him.

Hectors warriors are either dead or inside the fortress walls. He is alone at the battle field. Therefore, he has to choose, whether to accept the fight, or to retreat, declining. After a short hesitation, he decides that "No, it's better to clash in battle right away.

We " ll see which one wins victory from Zeus (22. 163). Being the brave warrior, he prefers fighting. Achilles leaves glory and memories of himself. Hector leaves memories and a new life. Sincerely speaking, it is difficult to tell that Achilles was defeated, as well as Hector, though. Eventually, both of them reached the aim.
