Opinion Paper United States is a truly unique country. When President Bush and his Bible thumping cronies introduce legislations that legalize tap wiring, torturing of suspected terrorists and keeping people in jail for years, without charging them with any crime, people think of it as normal. However, once the municipal authorities introduce legislations that are meant to promote public health, many citizens consider it as something that deprives them of their civil rights. In 2003, New Yorks Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pushed through a smoking prohibition laws, even though that the majority of restaurants owners were strongly opposed to it. They were predicting that such prohibition would heavily affect their businesses, while going as far as demanding compensations from the government. Yet, it never happened, people just had to adjust their act accordingly and there were no dramatic developments involved, despite what psychologists were predicting.

Today, New York is the cleanest city in America, when it comes to second hand smoking. The same situation appears to be with banning the usage of trans fats in New York restaurants. On December 5, 2006, New York City Board of Health has voted in favor of eliminating the cooking practices that are considered harmful to public health. From now on, restaurants owners are going to be heavily fined, if the amount of trans fats in the food is not kept to a minimum.

In their article New York Bans Most Trans Fats in Restaurants Thomas Lueck and Kim Severson explain the effects of trans fats on persons health in very popular manner: Trans fats are the chemically modified food ingredients that raise levels of a particularly unhealthy form of cholesterol and have been squarely linked to heart disease (Lueck, Severson). Therefore, we can only wonder about why it took so long for this legislative initiative to take place. It is not a secret that about a half of adults in America are overweight. One of the reasons why the tendency towards obesity among American gains momentum is that hawks of political-correctness teach people that they should not think of their bulging bellies as something unnatural, just as they teach children in schools that homosexuals are as normal as everybody else. We cannot refer to a fat person as fat anymore. Instead, it is required now to refer to such person as nutritionally challenged or some other nonsense.

Nevertheless, politically correct terminology cannot change the ways of nature. The study of professors Janet Wojcicki and Melvin Heyman Healthier Choices and Increased Participation in a Middle School Lunch Program: Effects of Nutrition Policy Changes in San Francisco does not leave a doubt, in this respect: The United States is facing a dramatic surge in the number of children and adolescents defined as either overweight or at risk for overweight. The escalating prevalence of overweight among school-aged children has been directly linked to declining levels of school-related physical activity, poor eating behaviors, proliferating consumption of fast foods and soda, and increased television viewing (Wojcicki, Heyman). People are obviously are incapable of reconsidering their eating habits on their own. We live in consumerist society, which proclaims that satisfaction of the most basic hedonist instincts is only a purpose of persons life. The spiritual poison of multiculturalism simply does not allow our nation to have any clear goals, in regards to the increasing the biological quality of its members.

The more there is talking about tolerance and diversity the more our people are becoming mentally and physically corrupted, which leads to a situation when they think of their health as something personal. This approach cannot be tolerated in any normal society. People are social beings, therefore, they cannot be thought of outside of social context. It is not only they that are being affected by their attitude towards health issues, but also the future generations. This is why authorities have the right to intervene in peoples personal lives, when it becomes necessary.

The banning of trans fats in New York restaurants will benefit New Yorkers immensely, even though that they might not understand it at the moment. Many critics of governments involvement in promotion of public health suggest that under no circumstances should the authorities be allowed to impose its will upon people. They say that it is only trough continuous education that citizens can realize the benefits of healthy eating. However, practice proves the opposite. Thomas Lueck's earlier article New York City Plans Limits on Restaurants Use of Trans Fats provides us with an answer to why is it happening: The Board of Health vote comes a year after it conducted an unsuccessful campaign to persuade restaurants to eliminate trans fats from their recipes voluntarily. It said yesterday that despite mass mailings about the hazards of trans fats and training programs for 7, 800 restaurant operators, about half the citys restaurants continued to serve trans fats, about the same as before the campaign (Lueck).

It is obvious that obtaining the monetary profit is the basis, upon which American society is based. If people were allowed, many of them would be willingly agree to sell their organs, without giving much thought to the fact that this would result in their premature death. Without government trying to promote health sanity among citizens, they would have turned into the bunch of degenerates long ago. Still, it appears very doubtful whether the promotion of public health, on the part of the government, in going to have a desired effect.

This is because American society is atomized, with every ethnic group pursuing its own agenda, even though that Medias trying to assure us of nations unity. Thanks to celebration of diversity, every large American city has its own area of Third World, where receiving welfare checks from government and selling drugs is a normal way of life for the majority of inhabitants. These people are the least concerned about their health, because their short life span is compensated by the fact that they often have 7 - 10 kids. This allows these ethnic groups political influence to become even stronger, even though that Blacks and Hispanics are known for their liking of greasy French fries and McDonalds hamburgers. The banning of trans fats in New York restaurants will inevitably result in the rise of foods cost by 20 %- 50 %. Therefore, namely the people that belong to these ethnic minorities are going to become the most negatively affected by the Board of Health new legislation.

Therefore, it would be only logical to expect their representatives to criticize the ban on trans fats more than anybody else. However, this is not the case. The majority of critics consist of aging White rednecks, which suddenly became overprotective of their civil rights, when they are being deprived of their cigarettes and French fries. This is why their pathetic attempts to discuss the promotion of public health in political terms cannot be seriously considered. The issues of public health have a strictly biological nature. Therefore, if somebody wants to die from having too much of cholesterol in its blood, he must be allowed to cook French fries at home, after agreeing to be sterilized, so that his children would not suffer from genetically predetermined obesity.

Yet, in restaurants, people should be allowed to eat healthy food. The promotion of public health is actually a governments duty. Our elected officials should not only be concerned about appeasing crowds lowliest instincts, so that they could be reelected for the second term, but also about preserving the biological quality of this nation. No price can be too high, in this respect. It is too bad that some people are used to unhealthy living to such an extent that they are afraid of healthy lifestyle more than they are afraid of death. Nevertheless, it does not mean that the rest of society must be subjected to their perverse understanding of what civil freedoms stand for.

It is not very likely that smokers and fatsos will be willing to voluntarily give up their unhealthy habits. This is why it is a governments duty to help them. Only intellectual elite must have the right to decide on what is good for people and what is bad and to be able to design public health promotion techniques that might not appear very popular at the time, but will prove to be beneficial for the whole society, in the long run. I am strongly in favor of government imposing more rules and regulations that promote public health, because it benefits nation, as whole. At the same time, I think that those people, who are over burdened with their own existence and who subconsciously strive towards death, by smoking and eating greasy food, should also be helped. It is whether they adjust their act or government issues them poison, so that they can end their misery.
