Running Head: Iraq War Iraq War (Authors Name) (Institution Name) Iraq War Depending on which viewpoint one looks at the current state of affairs in the world because of the Iraq war, this war has most certainly made the world a far less stable place to live in. With the everyday death toll of our soldiers as well as the majority of innocent Iraqi people it become more and more complex to know what the fighting is now all about. Saddam has gone and Iraq has been broken and as the saying goes, you can not kill a cat again and again and again so it is time to bring back the soldiers home as there is no more a valid and justifiable reason for us to be in Iraq. Gradually it is becoming a war of our fighting president and not of the United States of America because too many mothers have lost their sons and when they picket in Washington looking for answers as to why their sons would not be coming back home, the world suffers with them and also want to know the reasons. There is also another saying which translates into the fact that the most dangerous people are those who have nothing to protect or fear anymore, so let us not push the Iraq war so much that we hit the wall and begin to fight the wall.

Today, as the worlds only remaining super-power, we in the United States are spending more than 60 percent of the worlds totally combined expenditure on development of arms and ammunition's for the maintenance of our armed forces and for financing our wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and terrorism. We have a team of coalition partners some willing and some with reluctant and forced willingness the methods being adopted to wage this war is now being seen with criticism nationally and internationally with the world being divided in two camps. The camp in support of this war is becoming smaller by the day with the blood being spilled is not only of the soldiers and the adversaries they are fighting, but also of thousand of innocent civilians, including the very young and the very old. A destructive pattern has set in leaving frustration, despair and injustice in its path with no prospect of things coming to any conclusion within the foreseeable future. On the other hand the growing camp against this war is voicing its protests in louder tones and if sanity does not prevail this seemingly low profile war has the potential to turn into a blazing inferno.

It is unfortunate that too late now we realize that in the first place the alleged links to terrorism and weapons of mass destruction by Saddam Hussein's Iraq were based on highly controversial facts and figures which have been proven wrong and the Iraq war together with our Afghanistan and global war on terrorism has brought the United States in the docks of world conscious to stand trial on accusations of violating of human rights, international law and even the laws of the U. S. Constitution in particular to the internment of war prisoners as illegal combatants at the Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The mistreatment of prisoners at the Abu Ghuraib prison by a miniscule minority of perverts in our armed forces has made us lower our heads in shame. The blame for the present war can only be blamed on the present administration of the United States because Iraq was listed as a state-sponsor of terror by the United States, in the wake of the 9 / 11 attacks tensions were high between the two. The United States government claimed that Iraq was a threat because it could use its alleged weapons of mass destruction to aid terrorist groups.

In this context the George W. Bush administration had called for the United Nations Security Council to send weapons inspectors to Iraq to find these weapons. Resolution 1441 was passed by the UNSC unanimously which offering Iraq "a final opportunity to comply with its disarmament obligations" or face "serious consequences. " As a consequence, Saddam Hussein allowed UN inspectors access to Iraqi sites, yet the U. S.

government asserted that Iraq was not cooperating. Although Resolution 1441 did not authorize the use of force by member states, in October 2002, the United States Congress authorized the president to use force if necessary to disarm Iraq in order to "prosecute the war on terrorism. " Meanwhile having failed to overcome opposition from China, France and Russia against a UNSC resolution that would sanction use of force against Iraq, and before the UN weapons inspectors had completed their inspection the United States assembled a "Coalition of the Willing" nations to support the war against Iraq. Iraq was attacked and invaded on the 20 th of March, 2003. Since nuking out all against us as President Bush had famously said if they were not with us, is not a nice option to consider as in all probability it would be impossible to exterminate a major part of the world population.

The United States as the only remaining superpower will have to learn to live with the rest of the world with whatever faults it has, just as the world will also have to learn to live with the United States with what faults it has. The United Nations as a world body must be given titanium teeth that can bite; with world affairs being decided in a genuinely democratic manner, with resolutions collectively and forcefully implemented. Perhaps the idea of revoking the veto powers of the big five would be wishful thinking, but definitely not a bad idea. When the human psyche is analyzed, it seems humans seek domination over the world they live in. Over the ages its frontiers have become smaller and smaller. The Mongols extended their dominance as far as the frontiers of their world extended, Alexander did the same, even the Hitler had similar intentions so why should we be surprised if we as the only remaining super-power also harbor such ambitions.
