Introduction Background of the movie Explaining Stratification Deficiency Theory Functionalism Conflict Theory Symbolic Interactions Perspective on Discrimination and Stratification Symbolic Interactions Functionalism Conflict Theory Conclusion Sociology Video Assignment In this world that we live in, stratification and other types of discrimination is evident. Each individual in the society is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions about a certain matter. Everyday individuals experience challenge as they walk down their busy world. Challenge meaning how others will perceive and judge them for what they see. One can survive this judgmental world by being able to handle situations in their own way.

Guess Who? movie is about a couple fighting for their love because of their skin difference. The girl, Teresa, is black and the guy, Simon, is white. This is not the typical couple that you will see on the streets. Teresa's parents were having their wedding anniversary so she had to go home and finally introduce Simon. Over the phone, whenever Teresa would talk about Simon with her dad, she would really brag that he works for J.

P. Oliver and that he is a rising star. Unfortunately, Teresa doesnt know that Simon quit her job. So the big day came, Teresa and Simon went to her hometown to see the parents. Upon arriving, Teresa did not tell her parents that Simon was white, so the dad taught that the taxi driver was Simon because he was black and totally ignored the real Simon and even asked him to carry the bags inside their house. Then finally, Teresa butted in and cleared things by formally introducing Simon.

And so the story begins there. The researcher would like to explain the stratification that exists in the movie through the four perspectives. First is the deficiency theory. This stratification uses ability to determine ones success. This was evident in that scene wherein Percy was interrogating Simon about his hobbies, specifically about sports.

Simon does not really like sports, but he lied to Percy because he wanted to get on his good side and impress him. Percy seems to connect manhood with sports. Simon said that he used to work in the pit with Jeff Gordon. He did not know that Percy knew Jeff, so he was caught lying.

For Percy, if you are a real man, then you should have at least one sport. Simon not having a sport showed Percy his weakness. Percy being athletic gave him the power to perceive Simon as a weakling because majority of the guys are sports inclined and he is not. Without even looking at possible factors that contributed to Simon not liking sports, Percy judged him already.

Second is functionalism. This is where the society makes sure that the high statuses are occupied by the right people, meaning, individuals who have the capability. Functionalism also serves as motivation for individuals to work hard. Every individual needs to work to inter-dependently to fulfill the survival that the society is attaining for.

Example, when Simon quit his job in J. P. Oliver, the company felt his loss because he was able to contribute a lot to their success. But when he left, they had a hole to fill. Due to Simons decision, the function of the group was disoriented. J.

P. Oliver had a hard time looking for a replacement. One person can affect the whole system if they are not able to meet the society's expectations. Third is conflict theory.

This is where the society fights for scarce resources. It shows survival of the fittest. This is one reason why being employed was of great importance to Percy. He did not want his daughter to experience a hard life.

Marrying a man without a job will create social change in their lives. Percy being in the upper class would not want that to happen. It is in their system that when they are in the better side of the worlds stratification, they would do their best to stay there and not go down. Lastly is symbolic interactions.

This perspective is concerned with stratification affecting society's everyday life. The stratification of society is evident through status symbols such as material objects they possess. Teresa's family is well-off. They live in a nice community and their house was pretty big. This says a lot already. As for Simon, his parents were not mentioned in the movie.

They did not really say much about his background, so assuming, the researcher can say that his job was his status symbol, but unfortunately, he let go of it. All the while, Teresa's family thought that Simon had a stable job, so Percy still treated him nicely even though he was white. But when he found out that Simon was jobless, he treated him differently. This shows how important status symbol is in the society depending on what class you are in. Not having that symbol that people are looking for will determine how they will treat an individual. Prejudice, discrimination and racism have been part of the society ever since before.

This causes conflict among individuals who belong in different groups. The researcher would again explain the movie using some of the perspectives. First is symbolic interactions. The environment plays a big role in influencing individuals about prejudice and discrimination. Example, Teresa's family is black. When she introduced Simon, they all got shocked because she did not tell them that he was white.

Teresa's dad claims that he does not care, but whenever they would argue it was evident that he cares. Percy would not be like that if his parents taught him to not to care about skin color. But during the dinner, Percy's dad was there, it was seen that the dad also cared and was furious at first. The environment an individual grows in, hones them to be what they are.

They adapt to the things that they have learned during their childhood and carry it on as they grow old. Second is functionalism. Functionalists prejudice and discrimination results to social stability. Majority want to belong in the group who possess authority and show dominance. Who would want to be in a group wherein they are restricted and powerless? In the movie, we would see that Teresa's family is rich, to think that they are black.

There might be some racist tone there, but the point is, they her dad worked hard to get where they are because they want to be in the group with authority. They do not want to feel empowered by others so they strived to be on top. Lastly, is conflict theory. This explains that unequal distribution of power triggers discrimination and therefore creates conflict. There was this scene that depicted a situation wherein conflict theory was applicable. When Teresa was helping her dad get ready for the wedding anniversary they were given the chance to talk about Simon.

Teresa told her dad that she was supposed to marry him. They were supposed to announce their engagement that night. She also told her dad that she thinks that Simon quit his job because J. P.

Oliver did not give him the promotion that he was waiting for. That made Percy think and ran after Simon. Finally Percy saw Simon at the train station and told him that he knows why Simon did not get the promotion. J. P. Oliver did not give the promotion to him because his boss found out that he was marrying a black girl.

Racism was very obvious in that situation. Simons boss did not want an employee who has a black girl for a wife. His boss used his authority and made an unjust decision. It is sad to know that the society we live in have standards and barriers separating people from one another. Statuses and other factors should not be a reason to restrict individuals from being together. Classes and skin color should not matter because we are all human beings.
