Women in China Chinese society has always been based on patriarchal principle, where man is considered to be the head of household and the role of women is limited to raising children, without being able to get a social prominence. Even up to these days, women are having much harder time, when it comes to getting hired or defending their civil rights. Since the time of Communist revolution in 1949, this situation did not change by much. Even though that Chinese constitution proclaims equality between genders, Chinese society lives by a thousand years old tradition, which suppresses women, in social and political sense of this word. Communist system actually corresponds to the mentality of Chinese people; this is why it does not show any signs of weakening, even though that this doctrine proved its ineffectiveness in other former Communist countries, except North Korea and Cuba. However, in last 10 years, the pace of Chinese economic development has altered this situation to a considerable degree.
The demand for professionals who can speak English and are familiar with Western concepts of commercial activity had risen enormously. This resulted in shifting social accents in this country. Women realized that new economic reality in China provides them with new opportunities, because the issue of gender slowly ceases to be a dividing factor in Chinese society. From now on, the abstract principles of gender equality, proclaimed in Chinas constitution, are being backed up by objective reality. Now women can rise to the position of social prominence, for as long as they are able to receive a good education. Slowly but surely, the gender prejudices loose their influence.
More and more women becoming involved in political and commercial activity, which even as recent back as 20 years ago was unthinkable. Nevertheless, it appears that women in China still have a long way to go, before they will be able to enjoy a complete equality with men.
