(Professor's Name) (Department and Course Number) (The date that the paper is given to the professor) Sociological Video Review of the Films: The Godfather Diary of a Mad Black Woman Love Story The Godfather Introduction to The Godfather The Godfather is Sicilian family's chilling struggle and rise to become a leader of the New York City Mafia organization during the nine years period span from 1945 to 1954 has been portrayed to perfection. The power struggle that almost brings the family to a fall, however the family business is passed on to a reluctant son in the end is masterfully balanced between the ugly criminal activities of the Mafia and family lives in which the characters are engaged. This graphic and brilliantly movie is considered as the third best film in the history of American film and the greatest film ever made with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola become synonyms with classic cinema by the making of the film The Godfather. (Paramount Pictures 1972 & Seeing Stars: The Movie Studios, Paramount Movies) Socialization Factor The film clearly reflects the social structure that exists between individuals who are directly or indirectly involved with the Mafia. For instance we can observe the way Don Vito Corleones daughters marriage to Carlo Rizzi takes place in the time period of the 1945 s.

The social life-styles of the American Italians is clearly visible with regard to the way families and friends interact and the prevalent code of honor that existed between commoners and the Mafia members. The dialogue no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughters wedding day serves as a statement to vindicate the respect and command the Godfather derives from his friends as well as his enemies. (The Godfather. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Social control The total control over all individuals and activities that in any relates to or involves the Mafia is evident from hierarchy levels existing among the gang members with the Godfather being at the top of this hierarchy. It shows us how the Don interacts with members of his extended family, those he has taken under his wing, and the extent he will go to protect them and further their desires. This control is earned just as much out of respect as it is out of fear. Because in his own way the Don serves the people through unconventional methods such as of the example of the undertaker whose daughter gets raped and who knows that it is only the Don who can avenge the wrong done to his daughter.

The Don makes sure that the culprits are appropriately punished and through such methods of righteous justice, individuals remain under the voluntarily obligation of the Don for life. (The Godfather. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 27) Deviance While all Carleone family members can be considered deviant in some way or other is most significantly characterized when Tom Hagen is sent to Hollywood to attempt to persuade a business deal upon the film producer Jack Woltz. After refusing, Woltz awakens in the morning to discover his prize stud horse's severed head laying beside him. Woltz immediately agrees to the Corleone's deal. Furthermore this incident shows the extent of the Godfather's reach with Tom threatening Woltz in a subtle manner with labor action in Los Angeles and implies the ability to influence other incidents that take place in Hollywood.

The killing of the horse at the behest of a Mafia family head 3000 miles away indicates the power of the Don as a mobster with national reach. The role of Luca Brass also reflects his deviant mentally mentality. While he is one of the most feared and dangerous characters in this film, who is also feared by the Don himself, yet the absolute respect and loyalty that he expresses for the Godfather indicates the psychological effects some people can have over others. This is subtly portrayed through the carefully manipulated methods used by the Don in this film. Politics and media The hand in glove cooperation of politicians, judges and the police being associated with the Mafia can be made from the fact that when Michael visits his father in hospital, he finds nobody guarding him.

Within minutes the police cars arrive with the corrupt Captain McCluskey, who breaks Michael's jaw with a single punch. (The Godfather) Culture The end scene in the film is justifiably famous - where Michaels hand is shaken and kissed to anoint him as the new Godfather he Godfather. This film, also influenced the mafia according to reports that suggest that its members adopted the tradition of paying respect to their dons by the kissing of their rings as shown in the final film. (The Godfather). Religion The solemnity with which funeral scenes and baptism scenes are shown in the film gives us the ideas of how religious the American Italians were in the 1940 s. (The Godfather. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia & Paramount Pictures 1972 & Seeing Stars: The Movie Studios.

Paramount Movies) 2. Diary of a Mad Black Woman Introduction to Diary of a Mad Black Woman The film Diary of a Mad Black Woman can be quoted in the following few words as being Provocatively and interestingly challenging. This movie has in general split up its viewers in two camps, the ones who hated it and the ones who passionately loved it. It has to be admitted that even the ones who did not like the film had remained glued to their seats until its very end. Diary of a Mad Black Woman can be called a modern day Shakersperian attempt because of its high melodrama moments and provocatively refreshing moments of comedy in between. The roller-coaster emotional ride in the film has given a twist to the story line, which overall has been a refreshing one to watch after seeing the run-of-the-mill type of stereo type films.

The Diary of a Mad Black Woman was adapted from a play by Tyler Perry with the same name. Tyler Perry besides being the writer is also its producer and had also acted in a triple role in this film. The movie was released on the 25 th of February, 2005 and was directed by Darren Grant and starred Kimberly Elise, Shemale Moore, Cicely Tyson and Tyler Perry himself. (Scoot 99, Mad about "Mad" & Diary of a Black Woman, from Wikipedia) Social control Helen is forced to confront and deal with the new and upsetting circumstances in her life and having to struggle with these sudden changes sends her into a barrage of comical confrontations as she struggles with the feelings of, bitterness, denial, jealousy, anger, revenge, and selfishness. Helen finally realizes that for her to recover from these changes in her life, she must begin to rely upon the power of her faith, her lifelong values and the compassion to forgive to heal her hurt. Deviance The movie revolves around the story of a couples seemingly good marriage which crumbles due to infidelity on the part of a successful and rising Black lawyer and his estranged wife and concludes with the fact that time heals the heart and faith heals the rest. (Synopsis) Culture Tyler Perry had based the character of Made, which is an endearing form of saying mother dear on his own mother, aunts and sisters. In this film, Tyler Perry has successfully characterized the lifestyles of the Black community with black comedy, where pot-smoking characters are portrayed with loaded guns and where humorous obscene language is through out the film. (Jalea & Teyee, 2005) Religion After Helen is thrown out from their house by her husband who admits to having had an affair.

A distraught Helen turns to her mother, grandmother Made and cousin Brian who take her in and she turns back to God. It must also be mentioned that for the attainment of inner strength and to prove the healing power of faith, the producer has nicely portrayed the way individuals turn to God. (Diary of a Black Woman, from Wikipedia & Trivia) 3. Love Story Introduction to Love Story Love Story is a romantic drama film based on the 1970 best-selling novel by Erich Segal and it was produced in the same year. The film went on to become a roaring success and is ranked among the most tear-jerking romantic films of all time. This film reflects the time-period of the late 1960 s, where the rich-boy-meets-poor-girl melodrama in stages with senior level education, a bit of aristocracy and ordinary life-styles in the background. The film was directed by Arthur Hill and starred Ryan ONeal, Ali McGraw, John Marley, Ray Midland and Russel Name, among others.

A thing of interest in this movie was that while it had its antagonists, there were no villain characters in the film. (Hall, 2005 & Love Story, from free Wikipedia) The Story The story is about Oliver Barret, IV a young man from a wealthy aristocratic family and Jennifer Cavilleri, a working quick-witted working class girl. While the former studies at Harvard University, Jennifer is a student at Radcliffe College the two meet and fall in love and after their graduation they get married. It is only after Jennifer is diagnosed with leukemia and as her health deteriorates and she has to undergo costly cancer therapy, that Oliver is forced to seek financial help from his father as her treatment becomes unaffordable to him. But instead of telling his father the truth, he leads him to believe that he needed the money because he had to resolve a pregnancy problem due to an affair he had. The movie ends with Jennifer asking her father to make her funeral arrangement and telling Oliver not to blame himself for anything and dying while tightly embracing him. (Love Story, from free Wikipedia) Socialization Factor The interaction between Oliver and his father is evidently of a constrained, reserve and formal nature because of the higher social standards of the Barret family. On the other side, the interaction between Jennifer and her father is shown as being very informal with no reservation between them and the mutual sharing of ideas and values is likened as more between friends rather then between a daughter and her father due to their socially average background.

Social control The factor of Oliver and Jennifer's struggle to cope with having to pay for Oliver's education through Harvard Law School after his fathers financial support is withdrawn, reflects also in the desire of both Oliver and Jennifer to regain the social standing levels from which Oliver came from. Their decision to have a child only after he successfully graduates and takes up a respectable position with a New York law firm further confirms a conscious desire to first enhance their social standing and thereafter consider the starting of a family. Social Groups The whole story line of this film is based apart from the intense love between Jennifer and Oliver on the socially different backgrounds they both come from. While Oliver Barret, IV is from a long line of wealthy and well-respected Harvard University graduates and basically from a higher category of social groups. Jennifer Cavilleri on the other hand is a quick-witted, simple working-class girl from an average family that can be considered from a common and average social group.

And it is clearly because of the differences in their social standards and grouping that Oliver's father severs his relationship ties with his son when the two get married against his wishes after their graduation. Equality When we look at the equality factor between individuals, we can observe that the individuals from higher social backgrounds such as from the one from which Oliver's father comes, looks down upon individuals who are not at their own levels. While Jennifer and her father, who come from an average social standing, have no such qualms and consider people of every social background as equals. In fact people from low to average socials groups can therefore be concluded to be more outgoing and forgiving. Family In this film the double meaning of a love between Oliver and his father is highlighted in the final scenes of the movie when Mr. Barrett realizes that Jenny is seriously ill and that his son had borrowed the money for her treatment.

He thereupon immediately sets out for New York but by the time he reaches the hospital, Jenny is dead. Mr. Barrett apologizes to his son, who replies, "Love means not ever having to say you " re sorry", which is the same line Jenny had once told him. (Love Story, from free Wikipedia) Culture The cultural differences in individuals from different social groups is the most obviously visible factor in the film, as the very them of the story would crumble if this was not made as its base. Psychological Impact This film had such a psychological impact on its viewers and people in general that the name of its heroine Jennifer had become so popularized that it remained the number one preferred name for all baby girls born for the next fifteen years. (Hall, 2005 & Love Story, from free Wikipedia) Conclusion The most famous line of this film was misspoken as: "Love means never having to say you " re sorry" instead of "Love means not ever having to say you " re sorry. " This misspoken movie line was voted at the 13 th position as the most popular movie quote by the American Film Institute (Trivia, Love Story, 1970) References to Love Story Hall, 2005, Not a Classic but a Pleasantly Old-fashioned Tear Jersey (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Love Story, from free Wikipedia (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Trivia, Love Story, 1970 (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > References for The Godfather: The Godfather, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web > The Godfather (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web > The Godfather (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web > The Godfather 1972 Greatest Films (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web and web > The Godfather, Paramount Pictures (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web > Seeing Stars: The Movie Studios, Paramount Movies (Accessed: 28 March 2007) < web References for Diary of a Mad Black Woman: Diary of a Mad Black Woman, from Wikipedia (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Jalea & Teyee, 2005, Plot summary, Diary of a Mad Black Woman (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Scoot 99, Mad about "Mad" (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Synopsis (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web > Trivia (Accessed: 28 March, 2007) < web >
