The Columbian Exchange In 1492, The Europeans arrived to North America. There began a massive transformation between two geographical regions resulting the exchange of flora, fauna, cultural customs and disease etc. This interchange of native things of each side was called the Columbian Exchange. This concept is taken from a book written in 1972 by a historian Alfred W.
Crosby. Columbian Exchange was both cultural and biological. This exchange & its effects on this world became the subject of the study & research. Slowly, the Columbian Exchange has become a part of history courses and texts. Different goods were exchanged between the two regions of the Earth, and it began a new revolution in the Americas and in Europe.
Christopher Columbus' first voyage started an era of large-scale exchange between the Old and the New World & that resulted in this ecological revolution. Hence the name is "Columbian Exchange. The title of this article refers to the interchange or exchange of plants and food products that took place between America and Europe after Columbus's voyages to the New World. Although the exchange was carried out in both directions, the paper places greater emphasis upon the transfer of American plants and food products to Europe than in the other direction.
The exchange of specific things are the most tangible and were studied by historians to the most important in terms of their biological and cultural impact. Many scholars debated about what should be included in list of goods exchanged, but finally they agreed on the things; which were having the most significant impact are American Corn, Potato, Horse, Disease & Sugar. The exchange of ideas is more difficult to diagnose and generates more controversy. However various ideas certainly exchanged during the Columbian Exchange and had major impact on the world that is becoming more globally integrated. Disease was also transferred by the Columbian Exchange. Eruptive fevers like measles and smallpox proved deadly and wiped out over half of entire tribes.
