The Lover not taken Trying to understand and analyze literature, it is also necessary to discuss the trends in literature at that time. But no matter how the discussion would be organized it is evident that the most important themes explored in literature are love and hate; man and his perception of the reality: and choice that a man should make. It should be pointed that post-Renaissance life and literature illustrates the influence of scepticism upon philosophy and literature. For a long time poetry is considered to be the main means to express the inner world of a person; his thoughts and emotions. The various techniques of language have been used and developed to tell about the deepest feelings. As a rule poets express them through long metaphors or rhyming stanzas.
Poetry is quite different from other genres such as fiction and drama because it does not rely on physical entities. There is very often no main character or he is faceless in poetry; but the themes of verses are always clear because they are the expression of ones heart and mind. Poetry categories were changed by time but the essence of it has not changed. Post-Renaissance life has opened many different forms in terms of romance, expressing love. But the essence of romance that Love can be manifested in many forms dates back to the dawn of time. The Lover Not Taken by Blanche Farley reveals the truth that a lot of times a person is faced with two choices; and everybody is free in choosing which path to go.
Even if the decision can change ones life cardinally; often a person chooses the path that leads down. In Blanche Farley's The Lover Not Taken the same life changing decision is made. The poetry was based on Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken and has a lot of common in the theme but differs greatly in literary means. Blanche Farley's poetry is a parody. The author shows the poem's narrator who is arguing about both objects of her affection, instead of just one. The narrator (a woman) decides to live full life risking all for lust.
But it is known that often further it's too late to change everything and life has passed full of regrets. In the poem the narrator represents two people whom she is in love with. The very first lines of The Lover Not Taken reveals the further content of the poem: Committed to one, she wanted both. The woman loves one man but still thinks about another person. The object of her desire is described as the man whose hair and smile she liked, Really turned her on.
She liked his hair, His smile. So, the woman does not know the man. From the other side, another man, is a person who knows the narrator very well, he is her love, In fact, to be perfectly fair, He understood her. But the woman chose the blond on impulsive lust rather than true love. The female persona names the object of her desire as "This new guy", the blond; but at the same time she pointed that he "really turned her on." The woman thinks about what others would think; "And I Stood faithfully by but by then who would know the difference." In The Lover Not Taken Blanche Farley perfectly represents duality of human nature. The other side of love and faithfulness is the drive for lust and greed.
The same resembles can be noticed in many works. In Romeo and Juliet, for example, Mercutio, Benvolio had little respect for their counter-gender and based their love merely on the physical appearance. Among them there are enjambment, irony, and hyperbole. Enjambment is used by Blanche Farley almost in every line. The element helps to keep the attention of the reader all times, so the reader does not miss a line, or pause. Enjambment is used in the first stanza, at the end of lines one, three, five, and carrying over to the second stanza on line seven.
At the end of The Lover Not Taken the author resorts to the help of irony. The narrator quickly changed her decision and took the fast way home, "and phoned the blond. " The decision is much unexpected; but the author chooses this way with the purpose to emphasize the uncertain features of human nature. The ending leaves the reader very surprised. The reader expects that the woman would stand by their man but instead of it she let lust surpass love. It is a sinful side of peoples life.
The end of the poem leads almost too comical effect with the help of hyperbole. The narrator is arguing about her decision for so long. It seems that she takes the situation very seriously. But at the very last line she chose the risky path and even, may be, changed her life forever.
Though two poems The Lover Not Taken by Blanche Farley and The Lover Not Taken by Blanche Farley have many things in common but they were written at different times. Blanche's poem sounds more modern and daring. It helps to understand what Frost was originally trying to say. The poem makes the reader think about the road they will choose next time. The Lover Not Taken is considered with the issue of loyalty and faithfulness. At the end of the story everything comes to its unexpected ending: the narrator stays with the person who just attracted her, as opposed the one she was in love with.
It tells the reader that there is no one, universal definition of love it is different for everyone, but it definitely includes sex, and loyalty, and faithfulness and many more other things. The poem The Lover Not Taken helps to increase enjoyment of literature and develop ability to recognize an author's purposes.
