Charlatan The play Charlatan is a comedy about the inhabitants of a small provincial town where the bureaucracy was catholic and all the people would put all their efforts only to please the enclave of bungling representatives of local government. The addiction of complacent higher echelons of local society was to live an affluent and careless life instead of working and caring about the town inhabitants and the town itself. Among the main characters of the play is the mayor of the town - a quite equitable person. The only his fault is that he cant be said to be too erudite.

Most of his time the mayor spends with his two assistants cantankerous Mr. Nosy, and captious Mr. Nosey, - and a judge hardly educated but candid and captious Mr. Plump. Mr. Hayne the main hero of the play who has a diligent servant Bob.

A postman, and a policeman also take part in the action. The entire story is turning round an unexpected arrival of some auditor who is supposed to check how well the town is being run by the mayor and other executives. By mistake Mr. Hayne a young abject man, who has no idea about what his arrival means to the provincials, is taken for the auditor. The first act starts with mayors inviting his assistants and the judge, and informing them about the clandestine and eminent news an auditor is coming. They immediately cohere and start to think of what should be done in order to entreat the auditors benevolence and possibly exalt.

Then Mr. Nosy and Mr. Nosey say that they have enticed a concise hotel keeper into empathy and he told them that the auditor has come. For three weeks he has been living in a hotel, and didnt pay. The callous mayor is astonished with such cogent information which is exacerbating into a real coerce for his career because everything the auditor might have seen in the town is not exemplary, but on the contrary dilapidated and bungled. The second act starts with servant Bobs monologue about the life of Mr.

Hayne. Bob tells that he is becoming distraught because of a chronic and dire hunger because Mr. Hayne wastes all his money and never has those to pay for room and food. The servant divulges that his masters life is an absolute anarchy and his cajoling the hotel keeper does not give any results, only makes him more adverse. When the mayor comes to Mr.

Hayne, both are afraid of each other. Their conversation is affable, but not too agile, and rather circuitous and circumspect. The mayor, however, invites the esoteric young man to his house and Mr. Hayne accedes to take the invitation in order to get a free meal for himself and his servant.

After dinner in the mayors house the town executives conjecture to bribe the auditor. At the same time Mr. Hayne complains that he has no money, and adjourns to borrow equal sums of money from each person. The executives think that in such a way the auditor takes bribes, and in all possible ways they try to buttress the auditor. With time the mayor even agrees Mr. Hayne to merry his daughter.

One day, however, a postman comes to the mayor and claims that all their efforts are emaciated he has opened a letter the auditor sent to the capital city and it was full of calumnies, and abject anecdotes about their town and its inhabitants. It seemed that Mr. Hayne was simply making fun of all them. In the last scene a policeman comes and tells that an Auditor has come and is eager to see them. The elite are silent.
