When Hilton was a small boy, his elderly grandmother saved his life when he was drowning in the ocean. Thirty years later he became a dedicated social worker, and married a beautiful woman.

This was the beginning of the novel that played a crucial role in The Between. Tananarive Due predetermines the end of the novel, and the culmination point, the catastrophe, the mystery and solution that will make together one line and reveal the missing details.
The novel frightens us because we believe in it. Tananarive in peculiar artistic way creates the plot of the novel, groups the elements of narration that are interrelated. The reader, in his turn, combines all details concerning Hiltons life and life of his family, the events that take place in his house and surroundings, and gradually comes to the final integrity that reflects the basic idea of the author. We should rather suppose that Tananarive made it on purpose.
