All people deal with death in different ways. In this story, Mikage has to deal with death her whole life. In her life everyone close to her dies, first her parents when she was young, then her grandfather when she was a young teenager, her grandmother when she was in college, then lastly her best friend and mentor Eriko. The first two deaths did not affect her as much because she was young and did not realize the ramifications of death.

The last two deaths changed her life drastically. These deaths made Mikage grow up and learn to be alone dealing with death by herself. Mikage never had a chance to become close with her parents. When they died her grandparents took her into there home and raised her the best they could. When her Grandfather died she was older but still to young to really be affected by his death. Her grandmother and Mikage then became very close.

They had each other and no one else. Mikage whole life was her grandmother, and the kitchen is where they came together and enjoyed each other company. When her grandmother died Mikage was very distraught and really had nowhere to go. The best way for her to cope with her passing was to go into the kitchen and remember the life she had. When she couldn't sleep she would lay next to the refrigerator. This put her to sleep.

When she laid here it was like the fridge was keeping her company. Helping her to cope with being alone. After her grandmothers death Mikage was taking in by Yuichi and his transsexual mother Eriko. Mikage became very close to them they became her second family. It was a rebirth of her life.

Mikage actually had someone to be with her. Becoming very close to Eriko. Eriko became her best friend and mentor. When Eriko died Mikage had to yet go through another rebirth.

Eriko was very close with Eriko. Eriko was Mikage's mentor and best friend. Eriko helped Mikage through a time in her life when she felt alone having nowhere to go. When Eriko was murdered Mikage again felt like she was alone. The way Mikage felt is best described by this quote from the book. "From the bottom of my heart I wanted to give up; I wanted to give up on living. There was no denying that tomorrow would come, and the day after tomorrow, and so next week, too. " This line tells me that Mikage was again distraught and felt she had nowhere to go.

Mikage then turned to Yuichi, which was Eriko's son. Yuichi and Mikage falling in love helped her to deal with death. The love was mutual but was secondary to the death of Eriko. Mikage felt like she took Eriko for granted.

Now she doesn't have anyone to be there the way Eriko was. Mikage has been through a lot. She's lost almost everyone that she has ever cared for. The things that Mikage had to go through were almost too much for someone at her age to deal with. Every time someone died she bounce back with renewed enthusiasm on life. She was forced to cope with death every time getting through it the best she could.

The way Mikage put it was "We live like the lowliest worms. Always defeated-defeated we make dinner, we eat, we sleep. Everyone we love is dying. Still, to cease living is unacceptable. " In my own life I have had to deal with death on numerous occasions. When I was in the fifth grade my grandpa died of a heart attack.

We all new it was coming but when it actually happened it were a surprise. I was pretty young about the same age of Mikage when her grandfather died. I truly didn't understand life and death. I still had a feeling of invisibility.

It would never happen to me. I went to the funeral. I cried and thought of my grandfather the way he called my name. It was annoying then but when he died I missed him and the way he always wanted one more hug before we left. I now know he knew his time with us was short, I wish I would have given him more of a chance to hold me and be my grandfather.

In High school I had a couple of friends die in car accidents. Marc was in his junior year and was hit by a train while taking his girlfriend to the doctors. He was a friend but had drifted away in the years before his death. He was very popular and almost everyone knew him. By this time of my life I felt the best way for me to deal with his death was to help others. At this time I was a Peer Who Cares.

This was a program in my school that in every hour of the day a peer counselor was available to talk with students. I always tried to have an open ear so people could talk to me about anything. After Marc and Melissa died I volunteered my services to talk with anyone that may have needed to. By helping others deal with there death I in turn helped myself through the grief. After this incident I have found a new way to get through hard times of my life.

Like Mikage I too have had people close to me die, many more then I have written about. And I feel the best way for me to deal with death is to help others and understand that this happened, we could do nothing about it. The best thing to do is remember that person for who he or she was and to always keeps loved ones close to your heart. The book kitchen is a very readable book that deals with death at a very close to home fashion. Mikage learns to deal with death and grow up the best way she can. Death is a tricky subject that everyone in there life has to deal with.

Regardless who you are death is a terrible thing that only when it happens, can you find out the way it is you can deal with it. Death of loved ones will always hurt you but like Mikage we learn to deal with it and move on with our life. When Mikage's loved ones passed she didn't role over and quite she kept going dealing with life as it came. Always finding something new to keep her strong and in tune with life.
