The article by Rick Castaldo, the father of one of the many injured in the shooting at Columbine, called Why the President is Wrong on Gun Control deals with one of the current issues in the domestic policy of the United States. The article is particularly interesting due to one simple fact, the author does not write about something that he has limited knowledge about. What happened in Columbine directly affected the author, and Mr. Castaldo has all the rights to speak out frankly and plainly. The understanding of this fact can provide the reader with better insight into the matter of the problem.
I will try to analyse the article from this perspective and see what Mr. Castaldo can say about Columbine as the person that has some interest in this issue. The authors main point that is observable throughout the article is own disagreement with the policy of the White House, and in part of the former president William Clinton, in regards to the issue of domestic gun control. Rick Castaldo sees the policy as one that will not bring any changes. What the author believes in is the fact that Columbine gun accident will be used by the government not for the resolution of gun problem but instead as the foundation for lobbing big government, liberal agenda. Indeed, it seems quite doubtful that criminals will go and get the licenses to their illegal guns when more paper gun control decree is issued. The author asks: why werent there any deal in regulating diesel fuel and organic fertilizers (the components that were present in the hand-made explosives)? Truly, coming to think about it again. If the new gun control was to be passed, what would be its consequences? The consequences are simple: law-abiding citizens have more headaches in registering their guns, while the criminals enjoy the same level of freedom and virtually no punishment for carrying unregistered weapons.
The solution to the issue is only one swift prosecution, and meaningful punishment. The article by Rick Castaldo possesses clear understanding of the problem, and what is even better about the expressed point of view is that it has not been very much influenced by personal experience. The author attempted to approach the issue from objective point of view, and I tend to believe that he has succeeded in it.
