The plot of Nathaniel Hawthorns Rappaccini's Daughter revolves around the rivalry of two scientists, and how their acts lead to the destruction of an innocent young woman. When the story is examined on a symbolic level, the reader sees that Rappaccini's Daughter is an allegorical reenactment of the original fall from innocence and purity in the Garden of Eden. Rappaccini's garden sets the stage of this allegory, while the characters of the story each represent the important figures from the Genesis account. Through the literary devices of poetic and descriptive diction, Nathaniel Hawthorne conveys the symbolism of these characters, as well as the setting.

The story takes place in mid-nineteenth century in Padua, in two main settings: the mansion of an old Paduan family, and Rappaccini's lush garden. The mansion is described as, "high and gloomy the palace of a Paduan noble desolate and ill-furnished" This setting is somewhat inspired by the Divine Comedy of Dante. The introduction of this mood allows the author to prepare the reader for the future development of the mysterious story of the mansion and the deeds that are about to happen there. The mansion provides the reader with the feeling of evil. Contrary to the mansion, another setting used in the story is the garden of Rappaccinis. The garden seems to be always illuminated by some mysterious light, even if it seems that there been no sunshine in the sky.

The garden is depicted as beautiful and alive place, yet with the possession of something evil in it also. I think that the two setting mansion and garden are strongly linked together. The garden itself symbolizes the first sin of the man, the initial fall of humans to follow their destinies. In Rappaccini's Daughter, Giovanni Guasconti and Beatrice Rappaccinis represent the original sinners - Adam and Eve. Giovanni symbolizes Adam in the sense that he is shallow and insincere. When Giovanni first sees Beatrice, he is love struck.

Hawthorne uses poetic diction when he writes, "the impression which the fair stranger made upon him was as if here were another flowers beautiful as they, more beautiful than the richest of them. " This passage describes Giovanni's feelings towards the beautiful Beatrice. However, later we see that Giovanni's love was actually lust when the student discovers that Beatrice has infected him. The author writes, "Giovanni's rage broke forth from his sullen gloom like a lightning flash out of a dark cloud. The similarity of Giovanni and Beatrice's story to the Biblical story of Adam and Even is quite obvious. Hawthorn did not intent to confuse the readers with sophisticated ideas. The passage of the book where Giovanni accuses Beatrice of her disastrous infection of him is similar to Adam blames Eve of her fault to be rightful before God.

Just as Adam, Giovanni does all he can simply to protect his own ego and self-assuredness of righteousness. An attentive reader can notice an interesting interplay between the science of the past (as in Rappaccini's Daughter) and the technology of today. The destruction of Beatrice by the poisonous potion can be viewed as the warning for the next generations. The father of Beatrice Rappaccinis was so fond of his scientific discoveries and experiments that he sometimes did not even notice the effects of his accumulating knowledge. To me, the rival of Giacomo Rappaccinis, evil professor Pietro Baglioni seems to be wiser, though the author presents him in very unattractive manner. The professor realized the potential consequences of Rappaccini's use of science and said the following: He would sacrifice human life, his own among the rest, or whatever else was dearest to him, for the sake of adding so much as a grain of mustard seed to the great heap of his accumulated knowledge.

There is a clear sign in the book that tells the reader what people can do if they are treating the science and nature improperly. Our world is very delicate, and if science is used with evil intents, the world can be easily destroyed.
