Language is important part of life in any country. When the United States of America was founded there were as many as 20 languages spoken on its territory. Besides, many documents were also printed in various languages. This was not comfortable for people that lived in the country. After that period, English started to dominate in the North America duet to several reasons. North America is the continent, which is populated by immigrants from Europe.

Large groups of people were moving to North America. Quite often, they were settling in separate groups, where they could continue speaking their native language. However, eventually together with the unification of country it became obvious that there should be one language for people from different cultures to use in order to communicate, and English appeared to be that language. The Great Migration of the 17 th century ensued was precipitated by many factors in England. One of these, which would become incredibly important in the coming centuries, was that of religious difference. Since the formation of the Church of England, religious dissent had become increasingly popular in England and her colonies.

One religion, which had a particularly important impact on the development of the American colonies, was Puritanism. Moreover, one language, which was English, also greatly helped to organize colonies, which in the future led towards creation of state. Abundant land in British North America played a key role in creating an environment rich in ethnic composition, which was not paralleled in Europe. Early British North America consisted mainly of immigrants from Britain, Scotland and Ireland, who spoke English. Furthermore, 3 / 4 of the North American population was American born by mid 19 th century. As part of the environment, the individual ethnic groups within this diverse population no doubt had a huge influence on one another in terms of social and moral values as well as ideas that went into creating institutions.

In addition to the conglomeration of different ethnic backgrounds, British North America emerged on the backdrop of the conquered Canadians, thus colonists whether those who immigrated to and settled there after the defeat of the French or the Canadians had to accept the fact that they would have to tolerate and even assimilate some of each others culture. British state authorities also had to be aware of the fact that it would not be an easy task to recreate Britain on the frontier. The environment alone would not have been suitable to recreate a metropolitan environment let alone the fact that British North America emerged on a previously colonized land; hence, there was more than just the physical terrain to contend with. British North America did not start on a clean slate had a lot to do with beginning a whole cascade of events that continued customizing the colony into something further and further away from the image of the metropolis. Since the majority of British North American population spoke English, this language became to spread out on the continent together with cultural influence. The proclamation of independence of the 13 American Colonies on July 4, 1776 had significantly increased domination of English in North America.

After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, a large amount of land west of the original 13 states and the Northwest Territory was acquired. The open land, additional benefits and other existing problems encouraged Americans to expand westward. The American people began to realize that the future of the country lay in the development of its own western resources. There were many reasons that made the people face the grueling and dangerous movement west, but the primary reason was economy. The ocean had always controlled New England's interests and connected it with the real world.

Puritanism was still very strong in the north so the moral unity of New England was exceptional. Having much unmixed English speaking population, New England contrasted very much with the other sections. All this and the fact that they needed to cross populated states in order to expand west set this section part from the others (Leuehtenburg and Wishy 37). New England's population compared to other regions was poor and the population growth was even poorer. The trans-Alleghany States by 1820 had a population of about 2. 25 million, while New England had over 1. 5 million. Ten years later, western states had over 3. 5 million with the people northwest of the Ohio River alone numbering 1. 5 million.

In 1820 the total population of New England was about to equal to the combined population of New York and New Jersey; but its increase between 1820 and 1830 was hardly three hundred thousand, not much over half that of New York, and less that of gain of Ohio. If Maine, the growing state of the group, be excluded, the increase of the whole section was less that of the frontier state of Indiana. (Turner 41) For more than 200 years, Americans have gotten by without declaring English our official language. Congress had never even considered declaring English the nation's official language until 1981. Americans have traditionally resisted language legislation, beginning in 1780, when John Adams proposed to establish an official Language Academy to set standards for English. This idea was rejected by the Continental Congress as an improper role for government and a threat to individual liberties. English naturally started to dominate throughout North America, because there were no laws forcing individual to know or speak English.

However, the main reason that allowed English to become first language on the continent was cultural uniformity of New England, from where English, especially after creation of the United States started to expand and dominate throughout the continent together with the countrys growth.
