Nixon was elected as President in 1968. Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was divided, with disorder in the cities and with war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon achieved success in ending the war in Vietnam. Besides, Nixon was successful in international politics.

He improved relations with the Soviet Union. However, the Watergate scandal caused changes in the country that led to creation of new laws, but it became the reason for his resignation. Nixon's accomplishments while in office, included revenue sharing, the end of the draft, new sophisticated anticrime laws, and new successful environmental program. Besides, one of the most remarkable events of his first Presidency term happened in 1969, when American astronauts made the first moon landing, which very positively affected the image of the United States. In January 1973, an accord with North Vietnam was announced, which eventually ended American military involvement in Indochina. Nixon did a lot for the country and therefore in my opinion, he did a good job, while in the office.

In his 1972 bid for office, Nixon defeated Democratic candidate George McGovern. In the next several months, Nixon's administration was under attack over the so-called Watergate scandal. It resulted from a break-in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee during the 1972 election campaign. Frank Wills, security guard at the Watergate building, discovered a taped door. Security guard thought first that someone had taped the door while moving furniture earlier that day. He decided to remove the tape.

Later, during his rounds he found out the door being taped again. After this, Frank Wills called the Washington D. C. police. Police officers had discovered five men in the Democratic National Committee headquarters. These men had six suitcases with electronic surveillance equipment in them and different burglary tools together with big sum of money.

Besides an address book was found in which the name and number of E. Howard Hunt was discovered. This would later link the White House to the break in and was the reason for investigation. In 1971 and 1972, Nixon assistants initiated or participated in a number of break-ins, wiretaps, and various dirty tricks all in the name of national security. H. R.

Haldeman, Chief of Staff; John N. Mitchell, Attorney General; and John D. Ehrlichman, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs were three key figures in Nixon White House. They were linked to break-ins into Democratic National Committee headquarters. Ehrlichman was placed in charge of conducting secret surveillance on the Nixon's election opponents. However, Haldeman and Ehrlichman handed down by a policy of deniability making them isolated from the risky decisions.

When the Watergate Committee created for investigation began to work, it faced the difficulty of executive benefits. President Nixon was trying to prevent the Watergate Committee from examining related documents and questioning White House officials. The President and his staff were making every effort that could possibly frustrate and weaken the Committees activities. The White House tapes provided the evidence that was missing from the Watergate investigation.

A tape recording that was made 6 days after the break in proved that Nixon and Haldeman conspired to use the CIA to head off the FBI look at the burglary. This recorded evidence proved beyond a doubt that earlier existed that the President knew of the conspiracy and that he actually was supporting it. That was enough to bring down Nixon's Presidency. Because of the tapes, Nixon was faced with what seemed almost definite impeachment and decided to resign. Nixon announced on August 8, 1974, that he would resign the next day to begin that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America. All the Presidents Men film accurately portrays the events of Watergate scandal.

Bernstein and Woodward's investigation uncovered the illegal operations during Nixon's reelection campaign. The story was written during the investigation process and was accurate. The film itself was aimed to fit all the pieces of Watergate scandal together and to tell people the truth. In my opinion, President Nixon should have resigned from presidency. By this, he admitted his illegal involvement and saved government funds.

It was also quick resolution of a problem. Besides, he acted, as real man should have.
