Oppression Influence of Identity In order to find similarities between the main heroes in books The Bluest Eye, Kaffir Boy in America, and Sonny's Blues we have to examine the backgrounds of the heroes. The lives of heroes and their personalities had much in common. The problems such as discrimination, intolerance, and oppression they were facing in everyday life makes it possible to notice that these problems influenced the identities of heroes. Sonny's Blues, a short story by James Baldwin, illustrates a strained relationship between two brothers trying to survive in the mean streets of New York City. The story revolves around Sonny's dream of being a jazz pianist and the obstacles that stand in his way.

Unfortunately, Sonny's salvation, his love for jazz, is also the single greatest contributing factor to his heroin habit and the difficulties between Sonny and his brother. This can be determined by first examining the relationship between the music scene that Sonny was involved in and the drugs that he fell victim. Then, we will examine the strife between Sonny and his brother that was due to a combination of Sonny's impatience and his brothers ignorance of Sonny's goal. As far as Sonny's difficulty relating to his brother, music played an important role in tearing them apart, but also bringing them together in the end. Initially, Sonny brothers opinion of jazz musicians was terribly low, and his ignorance towards the subject was intolerable for Sonny. For instance, after their mothers funeral, Sonny and his brother got into a large argument about Sonny's plans for the future.

It wasnt something so simple as his brother feeling that Sonny was wasting potential, but a long, drawn out, emotional conversation that illustrates just how far apart the brothers actually were. Sonny could not understand how his brother was unable to grasp the concept of his little brother being a professional musician, and likewise, Sonny's brother could not adequately express his feelings towards the subject, if for no other reason than the fact that he knew very little about jazz. For Sonny, the music was everything, and he could not abide by his brothers conservative views on the matter. As mentioned before, Sonny's brother did not understand Sonny's fascination with jazz, thought it foolish to spend his life playing music with good-time people, and told Sonny this in so many words. Sonny's brother was a schoolteacher, and a logical man. Finally, Sonny asks his brother to come see him play that night at a club.

Sonny's blues flowed from him, and it seemed to be therapeutic, not only for Sonny's brother, but for Sonny himself. It is at this point that Sonny's brother realizes that he (Sonny) could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did (Baldwin 1824). At the very end, when Sonny sips from his scotch and milk and nods out to his brother, the reader gets the feeling that Sonny and his brother understand each other better now, and that they are headed for a brighter future by admitting to the past. In the book Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathebane, there are many obstacles that Mark the protagonist has to overcome.

The first of his problems was to get through school in his poor South African ghetto. The second was to achieve his goal and receive a tennis scholarship to an American college. Marks father is one of the major antagonist, he was opposed anything to do with Mark getting an education in a school. He was a very traditional man and he did not like anything that had to do with the white man. He thought it was nonsense to get a white mans education and he would not provide the money that was necessary to get Mark for school. Through the support of Marks Mother and grandmother, Mark found success in school.

He always was ranked in the top of his class and received scholarships to continue studies. At the end of Marks schooling he receives a job offering in South Africa for him to work as a manager of the company, he decides to accept this job for the time being because his family needed the money to send his brothers and sisters to school. Mark end up successfully making it through school and ending up being one of the top in his class. The second major conflict in the book was that Mark wanted to get a scholarship to an American college.

Mark first started playing tennis in the ghetto and became the best player in Alexandria. When an international tournament came to South Africa Mark was asked to play in it as a native African player to show to the rest of the world that the apartheid laws separating the native Africans were being changed. This was not true though, the native Africans were being allowed to play in only a few selected tournaments as examples. Since this was not fair to the native Africans, they decided to boycott the event. Mark decided to play in this tournament even though he was considered a traitor to his people and was banned from playing in the native African tournaments for life. This decision changed his life because he met a famous American tennis star, which helped him to apply to many American colleges.

Thanks to Marks own inner strength and self-determination he achieves his goal and he received a full college scholarship to an American college. The major character in The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison was Pecola Breedlove. Pecola Breedlove is an eleven-year-old black girl around whom the story revolves. Her innermost desire is to have the "bluest" eyes so that others will view her, as pretty in the end that desire is what finishes her, she believes that God gives her blue eyes causing her insanity. She does not have many friends other than Claudia and Frieda. Throughout the book, we see how other children pick on Pecola and then later on abused by Chilly, her father.

Her mother does not care for her either her actions toward Pecola are not without contempt. The world around Pecola is filled with symbols of whiteness. After comparing the lives of the heroes it is possible to make a judgment on human condition. People depend on the world and in many cases are not able to solve their problems by themselves. Sometimes, it is even hard to find self-value and self-worth. The situations in which heroes from these books were in is full of oppression.

It greatly influences their personality, certainly in a negative way. Their experiences make them to fight for their place in a world and it is good that their efforts were successful, however, in many cases life can be so unfair and full of discrimination that it is absolutely impossible to change something. In my opinion, the main heroes of these three books have a lot in common; especially they have the same problems. However, they demonstrate different approach towards solving them, which makes them different. Sources: Morrison, Toni. The Bluest Eye.
