First, I need to figure out where I would like to live not from the economic point of view, but from cultural one. If I would be offered a job in Dublin, I would have a wonderful opportunity to see Ireland from within and to become familiar with the Irish lifestyle. It is just like being an exchange student (in my case exchange worker). Ireland is a European country, therefore the culture and the lifestyle are a little bit different from what we have used to in the States. I may have some problems with getting used to Irish accent, but I think that with time I can overcome this insignificant issue. Another thing that can cause some trouble for me is the difference in corporate culture, because I believe that cultural difference of a country influences corporate culture.
As you understand, Portland and Austin also have some cultural differences, but in general, they are average American cities. I cannot say that choosing one of them would not be a right choice, because the difference in climate has some peculiarities. I would consider moving to Dublin to be a wonderful challenge to fit in the life of a foreign country. Besides cultural effects, I would have a nice opportunity to visit Europe during my vacations.
Great Britain, for instance, is the closest country to Ireland. From Dublin, it would be quite easy for me to get to London, Manchester, Liverpool, or any other English city, where I could have wonderful time. Ireland and USA both are highly developed democratic countries. Therefore, I think it is impractical to compare living costs of those three cities, for the simple reason that living costs, such as food, clothing, and other basic expenses depend on the amount of money that circulates in the city. Consequently, the more money I would make the more I would spend, and this is the basic formula of life. As a result, I will be eager to find the job that I like, not the job that will bring me the biggest income.
For instance, the range between the costs of apartments can be very different. I can live in a quite primitive one with basics, and I can live in a huge wonderful house and all this will only depend on my salary. The more I make, the more I will spend. For this reason I think that there is not need to discuss the cost of the apartment, besides the costs of renting one do not significantly wary in the three cities.
Still there are some passes and minuses of the geographical location of each city. Airline roundtrip ticket to Dublin will cost me approximately $ 450 - 700, roundtrip ticket to whether Portland or Austin will cost $ 200 - 400. I do not see that the difference is to significant, because if to think that traveling from Dublin to my current place of living will take two times longer than traveling from Austin or Portland. Would I prefer to live in hot and dry Austin, or I would like to settle in rainy and hazy Dublin, or mild but humid Portland? I do not know yet. However, if the only thing that I have do deal with would be weather, I would definitely prefer sunny Texas. If all issues that may seem significant for a regular person are not significant for me, (because I am not a regular person), you have a right to ask, what really matters to me?
I would say that I enjoy change of situation and change of culture, which will make me exited. Yet, we should not forget psychology that suggests that change of place of living makes individualists happier (individualists are not being homesick). I came into conclusion, that Dublin will make me a little bit happier than Portland or Austin therefore I am choosing Dublin. Unfortunately, our assignment did not include Monte Carlo as a possible consideration, because I would go there right away!
Nevertheless, the main determinant of where to go would become money for me. If I would have a wonderful salary somewhere in Iceland, where it is cold, wet, and ugly, I would not mind going there. With a high salary, (we should not judge good salary according to American scale) I could have one of the best living conditions available at a certain location. Therefore, for me it money would make a difference where to go. Besides, I should like my job and my boss in order to feel comfortable in new setting and in new culture. However, if to drop the salary issue, I would personally prefer moving to Dublin.
I really want to spend couple of years abroad gaining knowledge about new country. This will be new challenge for me. I am not planning to have children within the next five years yet, so I do not need to worry about their education. Crime rates do not bother me too, because both U. S. and Ireland are civilized countries and police is working fine in both of them.
Some two or three percent higher crime rates will not make any difference, because if you have to face the trouble, you will face it, it all depends on luck and chance, just like playing a card game. Information that I have found on the Web about Dublin, suggests that it would be first of all good cultural experience and second lot of fun. There are many wonderful places to visit and the prices for services are not too expensive. Finally, I would have a brilliant opportunity to meet Irish girls and to find out more about them, while sitting in a real Irish pub drinking awesome Guinness beer, enjoying the life! One thing is bad, Irish banks do not accept hundred dollar bills, but I can deal with it.
So, what else do I need to worry about? My future career will be successful!
