It would not be just because would be harming more lives than we would be helping. If it is true that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction, we should have considered whether or not we thought that they would use them to kill a large amount of people. This would have to be figured out in order to make a decision of whether or not to go to war. So if it was plausible that Saddam would use these weapons against his own people, it is pretty much a given that he would use them against American soldiers as well as non-combatants in order to inflict great harm on anyone that gets in his way.
Along with the facts above and the possibilities mentioned, the criterion of proportionality has been met in order to conceive a war against Iraq as just. However, as the American troops entered Iraq and won the war, it became obvious that there actually were no weapons of mass destruction, and this criterion of proportionality was deployed for no good. The last bit of criteria I am going to deal with is that of right or good intentions. The general thrust of the concept being that a nation waging a just war should be doing so for the cause of justice and not for reasons of self-interest or aggrandizement. (Childress, p. 432) In other words this means that to be involved in a just war the intentions of that war are not motivated by interests with respect to economic gain but by fighting against an aggressor for injustices in which it has committed. S. has interests in the oil business in the mid-east. This may or may not have a direct correlation with the conflict that took place between Iraq and the U. S. along with its allies, but it is something to take into consideration. Above all, the main problem that the U.
S. has with Iraq is that it possesses weapons of mass destruction and the U. S. is concerned that they are more than willing to use them if they do not get what they want. This portion of criteria may be looked at two different ways.
One is that the U. S. has interests of economic gain with regards to Iraq and two that the U. S. is concerned about the weapons that they have and are capable of using. I have concluded that the first idea greatly outweighs the first and this fulfills the criteria of entering into a just war.
Thus, according to the just war theory, when we take into consideration that not all the criteria were met, the war could not be called just at all, therefore we should get out of Iraq right now. There is always a different view on a social issue like war with Iraq, and there is a large amount of people that believe war with Iraq to be just. Those people claim that the US troops should have a permanent base in Iraq and that we should not get out of this country. One of the main arguments presented to defend this cause is that the regime of Saddam was a totalitarian one, and it oppressed the citizens of Iraq.
Moreover, innocent civilians were killed for no reasons at all, which urged a democratic country like US to intervene. Besides that, there was a possibility of Iraqi military researching and manufacturing chemical weapons of mass destruction. To allow the Iraqi leader and his military possess those weapons would have threatened the whole world, that is why the US intervened. Still another argument is that the citizens of Iraq wanted their regime changed, but could not do anything on their own. However, no international law could support and justify the invasion of a foreign country on a mere assumption that its citizens need help and cannot handle the situation themselves.
