Cherubim: the Cherubim are the second mightiest order of angels. Unlike the common depiction of these angels in art, their 'actual' appearance is not anything like it. The Cherubim have four wings and four heads. The four heads point out in the four cardinal directions. So much for child likeness! Cherubim is plural for the word Cherub, and derives from the Hebrew word Kerry meaning knowledge or one who intercedes.
They are the next closest to God in Christian mythology and are also the bearers of His chariot whenever he decides to leave and roam about the universe. In the Book of Genesis it is the Cherubim who force Adam and Eve out of Eden and bar the gates and also keep watch over Eden until the Day of Judgement. Thrones: Thrones are the third most powerful angelic order within the hierarchy. They are also known as the Ophanim or Galgallin. They are supposedly very swift, possibly the fastest of all the angels, and are often depicted as wheel-like beings with many eyes, hence their nicknames "Great Wheels" and "Many Eyed Ones." It is not known how many wings the Thrones have, if they have any at all, considering they are depicted as wheels.
Their leader is said to be Raphael. Dominations: the order of Dominations comprises the fourth order of angels. These angels also go by Dominions, Lords, Kunatetes, or Hashmallim. The Dominations are said to regulate the duties of God, which I take to understand as looking over what He has created and making sure that the universe moves steadily along without any major hitches.
It is said that in their heaven, the celestial letters of the Holy Name of God hang upon their ceiling. Some reputed leaders of the Dominations are Zadkiel, Hashmal, Muriel, and Gabriel. Virtues: Virtues are the fifth order of angels. They are known as Malakim, Dynamic, and Tarshishim.
The Virtues are the angels that are in charge of making miracles. I guess they go about this when God has too many other things to do besides awe people with His power. Their nicknames are "The Brilliant Ones" or "The Shining Ones." Some angels that are said to be the leaders of the Virtues are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Gabriel, Tarshish, and Satan (el). Powers: the Powers are the sixth order of angels. They also go by Dynamic, Potentiates, and Authorities. The Powers were supposedly the first groups of angels created by God on the second day of all creation.
Their main purpose is to be on constant lookout for any intrusion of Hell's Legions into Heaven or earth. It is said that during the War in Heaven, the greatest number of angels fell from this order. The leader of the Powers is reputedly the Archangel Came. Principalities: the Principalities are the seventh order of angels. Not too much has been said of this order, but a few angels belonging to this order have done some famous things in Christian mythology.
For example, the angel Hamiel is the angel who supposedly took the prophet Enoch up into Heaven when he died. Also the angel Cervill, who is also known as the Prince of Strength, was the one who aided David in his battle against Goliath. The leaders of the Principalities are supposedly Nisroch (originally Assyrian, later an angel who fell from Heaven), Anal, and Hamiel. Archangels: though the Archangels fall into the earth slot of the hierarchy, don't let that fool you into thinking that they are not as strong as their brethren. Archangels are best known for their roles as messengers in the Bible. For example, it is the Archangel Gabriel who told Mary of her upcoming birth of Jesus Christ.
Archangels are said to be very powerful. They include an impressive list of names, and I will go into more detail in a later section on some famous angels. For now, some of the angels included within the order of the Archangels include Michael, the supreme commander of the armies of Heaven, Gabriel, whose name appears more than once as the leader of more powerful angelic orders, and Raphael, who is said to be the leader of the Cherubim who guard Eden.
