Siddharta Gautama, called by many as Buddha and the father of Buddhism, was born B. C. 560 near the town of Kapilavastu. His father, Suddhodana, was the king of the Sakhyas. Prince Siddharta did not want for material comforts.

Nevertheless, he was profoundly dissatisfied. He observed that most human beings were poor and continually suffered from want. Even those who were wealthy were frequently frustrated and unhappy, and all men were subject to disease and ultimately succumbed to death. Surely, Siddharta thought, there must be more to life than transitory pleasures, which were all too soon obliterated by suffering and death. One event that would change Siddharta's perspectives was the very day he managed to get out of the walled enclosure of the palace and roamed around town. Together with his servant, for the first time Siddharta experienced the world as it is.

With the chance encounter with a decrepit old man, a sick, a corpse, and a monk, Siddharta renounced the status and wealth he had for a life of a monk. His contact with the old man made him realize the mortality of life, that no wealth in the world can stop its inevitability. World happiness is transitory, hence his renunciation of wealth in search for spiritual fulfillment. The impact left with the chance encounter of a monk, too, led to the life of an ascetic. The inner peace and dynamic personality of the monk made him choose the same path he admired. Jesus, on the other hand, formulated the basic ethical ideas of Christianity, as well as its basic spiritual outlook and its main ideas concerning human conduct.

He was a devout Jew. It has been frequently pointed out that Jesus was in many ways very similar to the Hebrew prophets of the Old Testament, and was influenced by them. Like the prophets, Jesus had an extraordinarily impressive personality, which made a deep and lasting impression on the people who met him. He was charismatic in the deepest and fullest sense of the word (Hart, 1982). Buddha since his childhood, was forbidden to wander off from their palace and was made to rely on the material things his father had.

Oblivious of the happenings outside the palaces wall, he married at an early age. Buddhism and Christianity are two forms of religion that are widespread all over the world. These two religions are believed to have very different perspectives on faith. But if we look at these religions closely, we will be surprised that they have plenty in common.

Jesus on the other hand, roamed the streets of Nazareth with Mary and Joseph allowing him the freedom to go around and talk to the rabbi and priests. The principal teachings of Buddha can be summarized in what Buddhists call the Four Noble Truths. These are 1) That human life is intrinsically unhappy; 2) That the cause of this unhappiness is human selfishness and desire; 3). That individual selfishness and desire can be brought to an endure resulting state, when all desires and cravings have been eliminated is termed nirvana. 4). That the method of escape from selfishness and desire is what is called the Eightfold-Path: right views, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right meditation. It might be added that Buddhism is open to all, regardless of race, and that it recognizes no distinctions of caste.

In the case of Jesus, it does seem reasonable to consider Jesus responsible for all the things which Christian churches or individual Christians later did in his name, particularly since he would obviously disapprove of many of those things. One of Jesus central precepts, certainly, was the Golden Rule. Today, the Golden Rule is accepted by most people, Christians and non-Christians alike, as a reasonable guide to moral conduct.
