Hunters in the Snow is a quite different story from those I have read in the past. The story is easy to read and understand, but if to get in depth of psychological aspect of it, it is possible to understand that human relations are quite complicated. In the real life situation people act in the way that they consider it normal. Whether characters pay or not attention to the circumstances they are in, but some force is driving them in the way that makes them act accordingly.
The characters of the story are Frank, Kenny and Tub, who appear to be true friends. They go hunting together and probably they used to spend a lot of time together. Hunting for them is some kind of communication. During hunting people become closer to each other, however some contingency might happen, which will change human relationships in a second.
Everything in the relationships of friends appears to be normal, but after a moment when Kenny shot the dog, the atmosphere becomes filled with aggression. Hunting was not successful at the beginning and it was quite cold. Friends were already tired and were busy with own thoughts and problems. Their minds were concentrated on the difficulties, which would be possible to overcome with aggression.
At the moment when dog is shot by Kenny, and had said that he hates Tub, who asked what for did Kenny do it, Tub takes a quick decision to protect himself from possible aggression and shots Kenny in the stomach. Tub had interpreted Kennys behavior to be aggressive and dangerous according to his instincts, while Kenny was shooting the dog because the owner of the farm asked him to do it. Unfortunately, Kenny did not tell his partners what he was going to do. After all this happened two friends had decided to help Kenny, who at that moment did not understand much of what was happening. He thought that he did not do anything that would make him guilty in what happened.
Tub and Frank intended to go to hospital with Kenny, because the wound was dangerous and Kenny felt really bad. At the beginning it seemed that it Kenny is going to make it to the hospital, however, after stops in bars it became evident that Kenny is less likely to survive, because of not getting fast medical treatment. The main theme of the story is complicated relationships between people. Tubs, Franks and Kennys friendship is really hard to evaluate.
Situations when one or two friends have another friend, who is friend to lesser extent, are common. Such situations happen everyday with each of us, but it is good that these situations are not so serious. Male friendship is complicated. Males appear to be friends at the same time, but at a certain moment they can act as enemies. I think that Tobias Wolff had given an excellent example of his concept of male friendship. Today you trust your friend, tomorrow you can betray him.
Many people can say it is not true, but this is probably only because they did not experience the situations the characters of the story were in. Three armed men outdoors, who are supposed to rely on each other. However, indeed, are relying on themselves, which makes possible for simple mistake to turn the situation into disaster. At it is normal according to Wolff.
