... the New Deal had made and called for a reorganization to social spending and social reform. The Second New Deal was born. Roosevelt then outlined six ways in which he would renew the efforts begun under the first New Deal.

Berton sums them up well by explaining that he would have an enlarged unemployment relief program, assistance to the rural poor, support for organized labor, social welfare benefits for the elderly and disadvantaged, strict regulation of business and finance, and heavier taxes on the wealthy. In April of 1935, Congress passed the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act. This act granted $ 5 billion to Roosevelt to do basically whatever he wanted with it. Despite FDR's efforts at controlling unemployment, he experienced a continuous inability to make progress in that area, as the economy continued to show little change. Even though there was a drop in unemployment in the second half of the 1930 s, FDR was never able to stimulate a return to normal levels until the end of the war economy in the early 1940 s.

After the tide of the Second New Deal, Franklin Roosevelt won the 1936 election with an overwhelming 60. 8 percent of the popular vote. It seemed that the stage was set for success in his second term. However, things soon took a turn for the worse, and the Second New Deal steadily lost support until it effectively was no more. Roosevelt proposed a court reform bill that would allow the President to appoint an additional Supreme Court justice for each current justice over the age of seventy, up to maximum number of six.

According to Pierre Berton, FDR never intended the proposal to pass through Congress, but rather simply wanted to warn the Supreme Court that unless it cooperated with his strategy he could cause difficulties. In this case, he got exactly what he was looking for; a more cooperative Supreme Court. Slowly this became the end of the Second New Deal. Pierre Berton went into a more cultural look into the depression. The effects of the everyday person. People became very diverse in different ways to deal with their misery.

Radio, films, and magazines were a popular way to divert the attention of those with problems. The 1930 's saw the rise of motion picture studios and motion picture marketing as well. The 1930 's was called the Golden Age of Radio. Comedies, variety shows, and soap operas, fifteen minute afternoon drama programs aimed at the women of the depression, dominated the airwaves. Comedies relieved the fear and tension of depression life. Films were also highly watched.

Comedies were also the most highly attended of all genres. The Marx Brothers became huge stars, appearing in productions depicting comedic get-rich-quick schemes. Magazines similarly focused on entertainment that took reader's minds off of their hardship. Life Magazine was first published during the 1930 's, filling the pages with pictures of spectacular scenes and glorified objects and people. Literature was also an important factor in keeping peoples minds off of their troubles.

Berton explains how the Great Depression was not only confined to only the United States but beyond the borders as well. The crisis occurred within the context of a global economics slowdown, which as a whole both contributed to and was influenced by the American depression. Many nations, especially in Europe, experienced economic trouble leading up to the period of the depression. The American stock market crash was certainly the largest event leading up to the global depression, but it was not the first sign of the weakening of the global economy, and it was not the last. The author begins to rap things up at the end of the book by explaining the recovery of the US in the depression and its effects. The Federal Reserve Board gained greater power and freedom to directly manage the economy.

The result of this was a rise in prices, a rise in production, and a rise in investment. These are all factors that helped the desired goal of stimulating economic activity and helping to lessen unemployment. By 1939, real earnings climbed about 18 percent. Even though it was growing, throughout the 1940 's the depression still existed. It was not until the United States entered World War II that the Great Depression ended for good. Berton sums up his book well by saying how the Great Depression finally ended.

Even shortly after the beginning of the war, leaders of industry held back to switch over to war production, fearing that the war would end too soon for investments to pay off. As a result, the army suffered significant shortages during the early months of the war. After it became clear that the war was deepening and the Unites States government was willing to spend a great deal of money on the war effort, expectations changed. The misery of the Great Depression was finally brought to an end. There was a book review that I read about this book. The reviewer had little criticisms to say about The Great Depression.

He explained simply that the book was just based on fact mostly, so there was no reason to disagree with Berton. I completely agree with the reviewer in that I didn't disagree with anything the author was saying. He made sound facts that made sense and he never got off subject at any time. The reviewer also compliments Berton on his writing style. The way he would write was a way that he always made sense and made it interesting.

I can't disagree with that either, I found the book very interesting, it was hard to put down. The Great Depression was full of facts and interesting information, and I learned a lot from it. Pierre Berton didn't present his information with any kind of bias, he just stated what was true. Occasionally he would add in some personal views, but they never strayed far from the truth. The book basically told the story of exactly what happened to the economy during the depression, and Berton did a great job explaining each part of it. He never tried to put in his opinions and state that they were fact.

He never had an argument, he was just telling a story of the depression. Therefore there was no side he could " ve taken one way or the other. He wrote his words so that it was understandable for all. He made sure to add in some interesting facts and tell stories in order to keep the reader interested. I think Berton did a great job in summing up the cause and effects of the depression.
