Desegregation Between the Late 1050 's and Early 1960 's Both of these pictures are the same painting, yet different feelings are provoked by each. To me the one on the left, the colorful one, is more intriguing. It jumps at you grabbing your attention and drawing your eye in, giving you a warm and lively feeling. The picture to the right seems a bit dull and emotionless, portraying a melancholy feeling. In the art world color is a good thing. It brings other elements to a picture that you can't receive by using only two colors.

Color can represent many things, emotions, mood, importance, a specific object, or as we have come to know the word, people. People seem to be assigned a color that people think represents the type of person they are. Yet, unlike the art world where a color is usually linked to only one trait or emotion, like, black-sadness, white-purity, red-evil, purple-royalty, the colors that we assign each other do not have set traits that are encompassed with in each color. The only thing that is set with the categories of colors we describe each other with is the tone of our skin!

The color of ones skin played a big role in the years between the late 1950 's and early 1960 's and defined the lines of desegregation, in the midst of this racial cacaos lied innocent children and how the case of Central High changed their rights to an education. When I look at these two paintings I see the description of the United States of America. One representing today with the vast majority of ethnic backgrounds with many colors all blended together working to make the picture a whole. The other a grim reminder of the segregated past with only two colors, black and white, and distinctive lines separating the two. Today we are a nation that prides itself on our nickname of the "melting pot." It is known now for the mixture of people from all different ethnic backgrounds and cultures.

Yet this name is only a representation of TODAY, and what we stand for TODAY, not the haunting memories of this country's past which has seemed to be forgotten in this new assigned nickname. With in this country's "melting pot" is suppose to lie freedom and pursuit of happiness. Yet, these very things were ripped from the hands of America's very own residents all due to a "color." In the mid 1950 's to early 1960 's segregation was alive and flourishing throughout the south. All though segregation was spread through the country in all aspects of life, the impact on children was felt highly. Many black children were denied a creditable education with the ruling of the 1890 court case "Please v. Ferguson" which established the law "separate but equal." This explains that it is lawful to separate races but have them equal which allows segregation with in aspects of life.

One of the famous cases that involved black children and their quest to an education was in a small town of Little Rock, Arkansas. On September 3, 1957 most white children from Little Rock, Arkansas made there way to school. Most of these kids were probably worried about how their hair looked or what they were wearing, but also that day nine black students made their way to that very same school. The top thing on their mind was probably whether or not they would make it through the day. Stepping up to the front doors of Little Rock High School they were met by Arkansas National guardsmen who refused them entrance. Under the plan of gradual desegregation of the races in the public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas admittance of Negro children was to be put into action in the school year of 1957 - 1958.

As these eight children were met with the stone faces of the Arkansas national guardsmen, as ordered by the states Governor, Orval Famous, they we refused admittance. These nine children did not give up their quest to a education and after traveling a long road there destination was finally met. On May 27, 1958 Earnest Green becomes the first black student to graduate from Central High as he joins 600 senior classmates on receiving their diploma. The events that took place at Central High had a massive impact on the nations racial predigests.

Though this event had to do with teenagers it was something that was felt by people of all ages. The cloud of racial discrimination was slowly being lifted. This even would be one of the first that would lead to the nation we now know as the "melting pot."
