In 1966 a new rock developed, this was known as san fransisco rock, or psychedelic rock. The grassland turned to mud, the stage began to slide off the hill it was built on, and the wind was blowing the tarp on the stage that was meant to protect the performers.

Somehow through all of this the audience bonded. For two days straight Woodstock made front headlines in the New York Times. Over three million people were trying to get there who never made it in. tickets were as cheap as $ 8 although most of the people came in for free. They closed the New York State Thruway.

There was eight lanes of gridlock all the way from New York to the festival. Overall there were two deaths from drug overdoses, and hundreds were treated and then sent back. The festival left its promoters practically bankrupt. The legend of Woodstock's Three Days of peace and Music became enshrined in American History. (Britannica) Woodstock is the metaphorical construct for the general Human condition; war, peace. the generation gap, human rights, and our relationship to the earth (britannica 7). Woodstock was a timeless event.

The songs had so much hidden meaning. Country Joe song Mcdonald's wasn't just about the Vietnam War but about all wars. Joan Baez's song about Joe hill is about all organizers. Richie Havens songs Freedom, and Hands Johnny, and summertime Blues is about your congressman not getting you a job. Many social changes that were addressed in the 1960 s are still the issues being confronted today.

The ' 60 s was a decade of social and political upheaval. In spite of all the turmoil, there were some positive results: the civil rights revolution, John F. Kennedy's bold vision of a new frontier, and the breathtaking advances in space, helped bring about progress and prosperity. However, much was negative: student and anti-war protest movements, political assassinations, and ghetto riots excited American people and resulted in lack of respect for authority and the law.
