... ata, while the other heard repetitive music. The Mozart group predicted 62 % more shapes on the second test. The silent group improved by 14 % and the third group by just 11 % (Kliewer 34).

Almost all studies on the Mozart Effect have focused on one particular piece of music, the Sonata for Two Pianos in D Mayor (K 448). Though the effect is most prominent through this piece, researchers are not sure which other pieces might work. Major corporations such as IBM Shell, and Dupont use music in the working environment to increase productivity and retention of new materials. Specially produced compact disks of Mozart's music is being marketed now for pregnant mothers to ensure their newborn in healthy (Campbell 22).

Even stronger support for his music's effect on the brain is shown on 30 lab rats, to 12 hours of the Sonata in D daily for two months. The experiment resulted with a run through a maze in a 27 % faster time and 37 % fewer errors than 80 other rats raised with silence or white noise. The improvement couldn't be due to enjoyment arousal, because rats have no emotional response to music. The study therefore suggests a neurological basis for the Mozart Effect (Kliewer 34).

Mozart Music is truly the work of a pure Genius. The brilliance of his work was not fully appreciated till much later in his life. Only Joseph Haydn saw the perfection Mozart had with forms of symphonies, operas, string quartets, and concertos. His compositions will forever exert a magnetic and particular fascination for musicians and music lovers around the world.

Chapter III Assessment and evaluation of Mozart With an output of more than 600 different works, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart reached the pinnacle of musical achievement. One could say he brought the classical style to its highest development. His work has influenced every composer their after with such a perfect perception for musical balance and harmony. It was said that Mozart would write whole symphonies in his head and put them on paper without ever having to change a note. A movie was even made for the illustrious composer. In my opinion, "Amadeus" (see Appendix II) has been one of the most magnificent and tender films I have ever seen.

It speaks so much truth about the man and yet, leaves you in awe and wonder. Mozart was given the gift to be gods instrument. The simplicity of his work was tied with graceful beauty and startling contrasts. It is almost absurd to hear one say " it is difficult with too many notes, my dear Mozart" said Austrian emperor Joseph II ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus" Encarta). If Mozart's music represented something of the style and sophistication of the privileged aristocratic world before the French Revolution (1789 - 1799), it also proves values dissident to that world. He placed this analysis in the depiction of imperfect aristocrats in Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute of the ideals of the Freemasons, who were deemed dangerous by Vienna's aristocracy.

Many of his finest instrumental works with all their splendor and excellence also recognize the darker sides of human compassion. Through all of Mozart's life, there has been one man who has constantly looked down at him with eyes of envy and resentment. Antonio Salieri (see Appendix II) was everything Mozart was not; financially successful and poised rather than socially awkward. Salieri was the Austrian court composer by 24 and court master 14 years later. But, where as he was merely talented, Mozart was pure genius. Salieri said to have confessed twice, on the account of murdering Mozart in his old age.

There has been no physical evidence of this holding truth, but it is the strongest rumor of his sudden death. When we hear the name Mozart, most educated people will immediately think: a child prodigy, master of the musical forms of art, and the most universal of composers to say the least. The thought of what more he could have contributed to the music world if he lived longer. What new ideas or standards would he have stamped into history? One has to feel sympathy towards his life and death. It's a true shame our greatest musician to ever walk the earth was probably our last.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will NOT be forgotten. Appendix I Figure A - An excerpt of Mozart's Requiem ("Mozart" Music notes) Appendix II Figure A - Cover for movie Amadeus ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus", Encarta) Figure B - Salieri in Amadeus ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus", Encarta) Appendix III Vienna, 15 December 1781 Dearest father, You demand an explanation of the words at the end of my last letter. How gladly I would have opened my heart to you long ago, but I was discouraged from doing so by the reproach which I knew you might have made me for thinking about such a thing at an inappropriate time - although to think can never be inappropriate. My efforts in the meantime are directed to acquiring a small but steady income here, for then one can live quite well with the help of the irregular extra sums; and then I intend - to marry! Are you appalled at the idea?

But, dear, kind father, please read on. I have had to reveal to you what is on my mind; now allow me to reveal my reasons too. The voice of nature speaks just as loudly in me as in anyone else, perhaps louder than in many a big strong lout. It is impossible for me to live as most young men do today; in the first place, I am too deeply religious, secondly I am too compassionate and too honorable to wish to lead some innocent girl astray, and thirdly I have too much horror and revulsion, fear and apprehension of disease, and solicitude for my health, to romp about with whores, and I can swear to never having done such a thing. [... ] I know that this reason, strong though it is, is not sufficient in itself. But my temperament, which is more inclined toward a peaceful domestic existence than to riotous living - I who from my childhood have never been accustomed to look after my own things - clothes, linen, and so on - can think of nothing I need more than a wife. I assure you that I often spend more money than necessary because I do not pay heed to those things - I am quite convinced that with a wife, and the same income that I have as a single man, I would manage better.

How much needless expenditure would then be avoided? - true, one then has other expenses, but one knows what they are and can allow for them - in short, one can lead a well-regulated life. A bachelor, to my mind, lives only half a life. That is my mind and I cannot change it. [... ] So who, then, is the object of my love? Once again, please do not be appalled - surely not one of the Webers? Yes, one of the Webers - not Joseph, not Sophie, but Costanza, the middle one. [... ] My dear, good Constant is the martyr of the family, and is, perhaps for that very reason, the kindest, most capable, in short the best of them all. [... ] She is not ugly but not at all beautiful. Her beauty consists entirely in two little dark eyes and a lovely figure.

She is not witty, but she has enough common sense to be able to fulfill her duties as a wife and mother. She is not inclined to be extravagant; it would be quite wrong to say she was. On the contrary. she is used to being poorly clad, for whatever their mother had to spare was always given to the others, never to her. She would like to be nicely, neatly dressed, but does not aspire to elegance. Most of what a young lady requires she can do for herself, and she always dresses her own hair.

She understands household economy and has the kindest heart in the world - I love her, and she genuinely loves me. Tell me, could I wish for a better wife? [... ] I kiss your hands a thousand times and am ever your obedient son W. A. Mozart Figure A - Letter written to Leopold by Mozart ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus", Encarta) Works Cited Campbell, Don.
