... lack and white stock coated with chemicals called dye mordants. The function of a mordant is to attract and hold color dyes so that they do not spread or bleed during the high pressure dye application. The blank had the soundtrack, a 50 % density copy of the green component and 50 % Black and white image which improved contract and increased the sharpness of the film.

A Matrix plate was made when these separate negatives from the camera were run through a matrix printer. The matrices were plates from which the films were developed because the original negatives were used so infrequently, only to make new sets of matrices when necessary so the original remained in excellent condition. The three matrix plates are capable of absorbing and printing dyes. The gelatin coat on the individual matrices were hardened in proportion to the different light that hit it from the original negative's subjected to the different filters red, green and blue from the camera.

Each matrix is coated with a complimentary color dye, the red matrix using cyan, the green using magenta and the blue using yellow. One at a time the matrices are brought into contact under very high pressure. With this new system came to light Kalmus finally made the impact he dreamed of. Flowers and Trees premiered in 1932 after Kalmus approached Walt Disney with a proposal of color.

Walt Disney went on a mission to persuade the whole company to change production from black and white to color and the first fully color film animated or otherwise was produced. The first 'Disney' color film was spawned. First one to win an Academy Award, Walt Disney's first of many. From this success came La Cucaracha in 1934 a test for system 4 under production conditions. But Technicolor was the real star in this first live action short feature film which featured sound as well but was otherwise a dumb film.

As a critic wrote 'producers may mishandle their medium, but at least they will have good colors well focus to abuse. ' - Technicolor. com. From this so called test that won a 1934 academy award for best short comedy. From this Becky Sharp was released in 1935 under pioneer pictures which were formed to produce color films. But the critics still dweller on the new technology looking at the color and not the form; this was partly due to directors exaggerated use of color and not focusing on story line such as Becky sharp. The next endeavor was to take Technicolor out of the studio and capture vast landscapes.

All of which was ill advised as producers didn't like the idea of taking the equipment into the open out of the control of the studio. This was challenging but produced a successful film in 1936 The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine. But where Technicolor set the standard of animation and motion picture was 'Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs' 1937 under the new system 4 with a new continuous developing machine for processing three strip negatives. Hollywood was convinced that the new Disney film would fail and labeled it 'Disney's Folly', but was a massive world wide success it even received special awards one regular sized and seven smaller awards. After which in 1939 the film voted the number one Ultimate Film in the UK 2004 based on bums on seats, was released to gain more than 200 million world wide Gone with the wind successfully married narrative, color and editing to perfection. Color added so much to the story and was used appropriately that the film received a special award for the use of color to set mood and the standard was set for many other color films even to this day.

Evaluation I believe our research method during the topic covered the relevant parts of Technicolor's history and was well researched thanks to the books and websites visited. The hand outs we produced gave our class mates information on the various mechanical incites to the equipment and technology used in the past and the different advances through the years. This was also back up with the slides we provided on power point blowing up the images on the hand outs so we could make detailed descriptions on them highlighting the differences between the systems. We also showed clips of films using the different technologies such as The Wizard Of Oz 1939 high lighting the use of color's and vibrancy of system 4 and a clip from Mystery of the wax Museum 1933 using the system 3 noticing the lack of blue in the frames as there was no blue filter. I believe the oral presentation could have been more smoother as I believe Tom was a bit nervous and did waver off the relevant subject for a while and did talk longer than we expected leaving me a short amount of time to explain a great deal of information which I had to compress and get across very quickly. We kept eye contact with our class mates and talked directly to the class quite loud so we were defiantly heard.

One mistake I made was calling Walt Disney by his first name, when it should have been Mr. Walt Disney. The other presentations were enjoyable especially the animation presentations as they were all different focusing in different areas from the history of animation from early drawings on walls by the Egyptians to Disney cartoons. I especially liked the hand out with the image of Emile Reynaud and his projector as it shows many different area and forms of animation, abstract ones also i. e. Rhythm 21 by Hans Richter.

Also the image of the cage and bird spinner was a good example of early animation and of optical illusion as this essentially is what animation is about making something appear to be moving. This was a nice prop to the presentations and captured my interest and attention. Unfortunately the most unsuccessful presentation was the presentation on sky and digital as his partner had to rush home ill, and I had no idea what the whole presentation was about and what information he had to offer us. All the presentation featured was an explanation of the different channels that sky had to offer and a brief history on the advancing of the channels i. e. sky sports one and two and box office.

Was not very successful in giving me any knowledge on digital broadcasting but his partner did run out on him so, he was not to blame, organization might of helped. Overall I was happy with our presentation and research to the topic and the groups performance in the different fields.
