Because Belisa Crepusculario had such a difficult childhood in which she experienced so much loss in her life, she is forced to become a stronger person both mentally and physically to survive such devastating circumstances. It will ultimately be this strong sense of survival that she develops through these experiences of great loss, which will guide her through the survival of life threatening situations. Belisa had a rough childhood. She was born into a family that was very poor. On top of dealing with poverty, Belisa also had to deal with living in a place that wasn't suited very well for inhabitants.

This quote explains her childhood quite well. "Belisa Crepusculario had been born into a family so poor they did not even have names to give their children. She came into the world and grew up in an inhospitable land where some years the rains became avalanches of water that bore everything away before them and others when not a drop fell from the sky and the sun swelled to fill the horizon and the world became a desert. Until she was twelve, Belisa had no occupation or virtue other than having withstood hunger and the exhaustion of centuries" (10). I believe that this quote sets up the rest of the story about Belisa because it portrays her as someone who endured many hardships as a young child and those are what helped her become a stronger person for those hardships. Belisa also had to endure great loss of family members as a young child. She was the only child out of her five siblings to survive a horrible drought that swept through the area where she lived, that claimed her four siblings.

This quote explains those circumstances. "During one interminable drought, it fell to her to bury four younger brothers and sisters; when she realized that her turn was next, she decided to set out across the plains in the direction of the sea, in hopes that she might trick death along the way" (10). I believe that her strong will to survive is what made her leave home, because she did not want to just whither away into death like the rest of her family had done. She wants to live and that was quite evident. While Belisa is making her way toward the sea, she encounters others who are doing likewise, to avoid the great drought. "They dragged themselves along painfully, their skin turned to lizard hide and their eyes burned by the reverberating glare" (11).

Shortly after that this quote shows how hard it really was to survive throughout this journey to the sea. "Many people fell by the wayside, but she was so stubborn that she survived to cross through that hell and at long last reach the first trickles of water, fine, almost invisible threads that fed spindly vegetation and farther down widened into small streams and marshes" (11). This quote reinforces the idea that she is a strong survivor, the fact that she made it to the destination, when many others did not, illustrates this point pretty well. This next quote shows how Belisa Crepusculario did save herself from certain death by leaving her home. "Belisa saved her life and accidentally discovered writing" (11). By leaving she not only saves herself, but she also comes upon something that would be a cornerstone in her life, and that is writing. A few years later while sitting at her tent in the marketplace a group of armed militants came for her, under orders from their colonel. They treated her very roughly, to the point where weaker people would have withered and died. "I'm looking for you" he shouted, pointing his coiled whip at her; even before the words were out, two men rushed her-knocking over her canopy and shattering her inkwell-bound her hand and foot, and threw her like a sea bag across the rump of El Multi's mount" (13).

This passage illustrates very well how strong Belisa was to endure such a barbaric kidnapping. It goes on to say "Hours later, just as Belisa Crepusculario was near death, her heart ground to sand by the pounding of the horse, they stopped, and four strong hands set her down. She tried to stand on her feet and hold her head high, but her strength failed her and she slumped to the ground, sinking into a confused dream" (13). I think Allende stresses the fact that Belisa has a very strong will to survive when this passage was written. In conclusion I think that the story of "Two Words" is about how human will, and how when strengthened through numerous hardships, cannot be broken. I believe because Belisa Crepusculario had such a difficult childhood it made her a much stronger person both mentally and physically and helped her cope with all of the losses that she endured and that ended up helping her survive such devastating circumstances.

It was this strong sense of survival that she develops through experiences of great loss, which guide her to the survival of a journey across a very hazardous terrain, and the survival of being kidnapped against her will to serve the wishes of the colonel.
