... -Ken players were reportedly involved in an argument with the coach of the Ar-Ken team William Eckman. In the report filed by local police there were no representatives from the opposing team involved in the dispute. The four parents involved; James Anton Garland, Alice Garland, Bobbi Jo Eckman, and Justina Jackson were charged with a summary count of disorderly conduct. This is the act of "engaging in fighting or threatening or acting in a violent tumultuous behavior. " (Valley news dispatch September 3 rd 2004). The event reportedly started due to an argument between James and the coach of the Ar-Ken team during the game. At some point the wives of the two men became intertwined in the argument, as this went on Jackson then attempted to step in so that she could "get them to stop" (Valley news dispatch September 3 rd 2004).

Jackson claims that " I just wanted all the yelling and swearing to stop because it was in the middle of the game and some of the kids were crying. " (Valley news dispatch September 3 rd 2004). Two of the women, Jackson and Alice Garland were accused of assaulting Bobbi Jo Eckman. James Garland was asked to leave the game by the leagues commissioner. All actual court decisions are still pending at this time. Why did the event occur?

The nature of the argument was not reveled, however it is safe to believe that this fight had something to do with the coaching style and or playing time of a particular parent's child. These events happen because a parent is over protective of their child and most parents believe that their child is one of the best players on the team and should receive all of the playing time possible. There are many parents that believe that if their child is not playing as often as another that it is a personal attack on them or their child. There are times where a parent is correct and the coach is wrong and only playing the "coaches pets" on the team. In cases like this it is necessary to let the coach know how you as a parent feels or views what is happening. But there is a time and place for such conversations and during a game, on the field is not the correct time and or place.

Support of one's child is admirable, but public displays of rude, embarrassing behavior is not proper support of ones child. What is being done to stop these events from happening again? In youth sports it is necessary for all of the parents to realize that there is no need for physical violence or verbal abuse of any of the other participants in that sport. It is necessary to explain and educate the parents in the ways they are to act at the child's games.

Some youth sports programs have instituted several rules and regulations for parents to follow at youth events. Regulations that involve designating language that is and is not allowed around the playing surfaces. Some leagues have even gone as far as to institute "Silent Sundays." This means that parents are not allowed to speak during the time that their child's event is taking place. Other youth leagues are making it necessary for coaches to play all of the players for an equal amount of time. This is necessary in youth programs so as to assist in the proper development all of the players. CASE 2 During a baseball game in Hollywood Florida a youth coach broke the jaw of one of the game's officials.

This act ensued after official Dziedzinski called one of coach Orlando Lago's players out when attempting to steal third base. Lago hit Dziedzinski after an argument near the pitchers mound when Dziedzinski pulled back his arm to signal the ejection of Lago. Police stated Lago "saw Dziedzinski draw his hand back to signal that he was ejecting him and thought the umpire was going to punch him. That's when he swung. " (The Associated Press July 13, 2000). Why did this event occur? Lago believes that this event occurred because he had a skewed view of the situation.

That could be true, however something had to have guided the situation to that point. Anger between coaches, officials, and parents occurs far to often and is completely unnecessary. This fact is one that makes situations such as this escalate into these outrageous events. The nature of this unsportsmanlike argument caused by the coach led to unfortunate event.

The lack of sportsmanship usually lies at the bottom of these types of incidents. What is being done to stop these events from happening again? In youth sports officials are making it known that they will not tolerate this sort of behavior. However, it is an event that happens quite often. "The National Association of Sports Officials in Racine, Wis. , receives two or three calls a week from officials assaulted by an angry parent or spectator, spokesman Bob Still said. " (The Associated Press July 13, 2000) These events range from pushing and shoving, to officials being run off the road by enraged parents. Officials are taking a stand and efforts are being made to force parents to take sportsmanship classes so that there will be less of these events happening in the future. CASE 3 During a stick practice at an Ice Hockey rink in Reading, Massachusetts two fathers, one a coach, Michael A Costin, and the other a spectator, Thomas Junta fought twice.

The second altercation resulted in the death of Michael Costin, the single father of four. Thomas Junta turned himself in to local police and pled innocent to the charge of manslaughter. At his Arraignment, Junta was released on $ 5000 cash bail. Counsel for the prosecution recounted the events of the night the altercations occurred during a stick practice where both Costin and Junta were present.

Junta was watching a scrimmage, which involved his ten-year-old son as well as Costin and his three sons. Junta became upset at Costin for not regulating the roughhousing and checking among the players in a non-contact game. Junta went on to the ice yelling at Costin for allowing these events to occur. Junta then went over to Costin as he was walking into the locker room, Junta proceeded to swear at Costin then the two men began grabbing and shoving each other. Junta was told to leave the rink by one of the Rink Staff. The prosecution went on to say that Junta left the rink at first with his son but returned to get two of his son's friends that had gone with Junta to the rink.

At this time Costin was also leaving the rink. Counsel then stated that the two men approached each other and began to exchange blows where Junta obtained the upper hand and threw Costin to the ground, straddled him, and began to beat Costin on the left side of his head and neck. Medical experts for the prosecution stated that the blows from Junta to the left side of Costin's head caused the blood vessels in Costin's brain to burst and cause his death. The medical experts also stated "the injury happens occasionally with boxers" (Boston Herald. com posted July 11, 2000). Experts for the defense claimed that this injury could have happened as a result of one punch.

At the conclusion of the trial Junta received six to ten years in a state correctional facility for involuntary manslaughter. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter instead of manslaughter because of the claim that it was never the intention of Junta to kill Costin. According to web crimes / involuntary manslaughter. htm; "Involuntary manslaughter generally occurs in only two cases. The first is when someone is killed due to criminal negligence, and the second is when someone is killed during the commission of another crime, where the intent was not to cause bodily injury or death. (This is often called 'misdemeanor manslaughter'. ) " Why did this event occur? This event was caused due to the negligence of both men involved.

Both Costin and Junta are at fault; both men should have realized that they were wrong after the first altercation and even before that incident. As the parents of the participants of what is meant to be a fun, youth sporting, event meant for the enjoyment of the kids, they should have realized that the entire problem could have been solved through a simple conversation between the two men. Between the two egos of the men and the lack of good judgment a man's life was taken and the life of another will be spent in a state prison for the next six to ten years. Both men had a history of making similar bad decisions; it is possible that by not having handled these previous situations that both men were under the impression that nothing would come of the events; unfortunately both men were dead wrong. What is being done to stop these events from happening again? In a statement made by one of the sons of Costin, Michael Costin Jr. , stated "Please teach Tomas Junta a lesson: Let the world know that a person can't do what Tomas Junta did to my dad, to my family and to me... " A statement like that one hits home harder than anything that could ever be done by any organization of youth sports.

The comments of a young man talking about his father's killer, trying to teach the country that it is not right to take out aggressions on another. Organizations are trying country wide to make it known that parents are not the law and should not take action against coaches and officials because they are doing something that is not to the liking of the spectators. The institution of mandatory classes for parents on sportsmanship is a step in the right direction to stopping these incidents from happening in the future. Education is once again the way to stop bad decisions; if all parents and children are educated on matters of sportsmanship then cases like the "Hockey dad murder" will happen on a far less often bases.

Fan Reaction to Sporting Events INTRODUCTION Fans are the most important part of sports; their views of a team are what make a team who they are. In most cases the teams that have the most success have the most fans and in the opposite is true for the teams that have the fewest fans. It has been said for many years that sports are the heart of America. This statement is made because there are so many fans of sports in this country. The number one question asked first thing in the morning by people of all ages is "Did you see the game last night?" With this tremendous love of sports there are many problems that arise every time a game is played. There are people that make and lose tremendous amounts of money on games they have bet on and there are fans that get killed when fan celebrations get out of hand.

With every sporting event there are winners and looser, even the games that end in a tie have a looser of some kind. This is a fact among all realms of sport from the professional sports all the way to the youth sports. The events that get the most publicity most often have the worst fan reactions. If a team that has a large number of fans wins a big game then the fans start to celebrate and there is always that one person that takes the good time to far and bad things happen. The same is true if that same team with the same fans are defeated, except instead of taking the good time and making it bad, they take the anger or sorrow that they as fans feel, out on anyone that is willing to be controversial with them.

For as long as there have been sports there have been fans and where there are fans there will always be problems. ACT 1 It has long been said that on Super Bowl Sunday the amount of domestic violence acts against women is higher then any other day of the year. In 1993 Linda Gorov a reporter for the Boston Globe published an article that stated "women's shelters and hotlines are 'flooded with more calls from victims [on Super Bowl Sunday] then any other day of the year. '" Gorov made mention of a study done out west by a women's shelter that on Super Bowl Sunday there is a forty percent rise in these attacks on women. This study also claims that this information is true all across the country. This was the first real public awakening of these horrible events. This controversy became so well known that even NBC aired a public service announcement reminding viewers that domestic violence is a crime.

Reporter Ken Ringle decided to do his own research into the comments made in the article by Gorov and other statements made by women's groups that held a press conference claiming that research done at Virginia's Old Dominion University showed that the Super Bowl was the largest domestic violence day of the year. During his research Ringle contacted one of the authors of the study done at Old Dominion, Janet Katz, to ask about the comments made at the press conference; her comment to him was "that's not what we found at all. " Katz went on to state, "that an increase of emergency room admissions 'was not associated with the occurrence of football games in general, nor with watching a team lose. '" (web). This one account does not mean that the statement that more women are abused on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year is false, however it does make an attempt to say that there is not sufficient enough evidence to say it is a fact that Super Bowl Sunday is the number one day for domestic violence through out the country. But it very well could be. Why do these events occur? Domestic violence is something that happens every day and it is a fact that the main reason this happening is that it is a way of gaining power.

In the minds of a man that is beating his significant other this act gives him power to control some aspect of his life. In relation to sports if he cannot be in control of the games outcome then he will most certainly have control over the woman that is there with him. This is not just an event that occurs in man vs. woman, just the opposite is true, ...
