Education is not the only thing that isn't given to this minority group equally. Employment, health care, and social services are also given less of unfairly. They are also a prime target of neo-Nazis and skinheads. Often the governments do little to guarantee them basic human rights. Though every country in Europe features different views on the 'Gypsies', some countries being more discriminating then others. In present day France discrimination of the minorities is slowly dropping, though 'Gypsies', and Arabs are still the minorities most discriminated against.
In England the discrimination seems so be slightly worse. Since the 'Gypsies' first arrived in England during the early 16 th century they have been considered a problem. They where viewed and still are as unwanted aliens and criminals as well as other bad things. In 1997, Romani refugees from the Slovak Republic arrived seeking asylum, but instead they where greeted with scepticism and mainly negative reactions from local residents and national news media. The situation of the 'Gypsies' in present day Spain is quite different then that of France and England. In Spain the 'Gypsies are divided into two main groups the giants and the hungary.
Though both groups are 'Gypsies' they have quite a few distinct differences. The giants live mainly in the southern and central areas of Spain. The majority of this group finds work as street vendors or entertainers. This group is mainly poor and illiterate. Despite this large set back they are able to mix well into the Spanish society and face minimal discrimination. Unlike that giants the hungary are not as fortunate.
This group of 'Gypsies' are much poorer then the giants group. They live entirely nomadic life styles, living in tents and shacks around the larger cities of Spain. Also this group faces much greater discrimination as well as trouble with the Spanish authority. This is due to there way of life, especially the way they earn a living; by begging and / or stealing. Many giants denied the hungary the status of being in their same ethnic group.
Despite this most outsiders tend to regard them all as basically 'Gypsies'. This tends to get the giants upset because they have worked hard to get where they are in society, where they earn an honest living; while the majority if the hungary group goes around stealing what they need. Though in Spain the living conditions for some of the 'Gypsies' are good compared to that of France and England: Sweden is the only Nation that has begun a training and placement system for the 'Gypsies'. These placements and training will helps them to find jobs This is extremely helpful because finding a job can be a extreme challenge to them on there own, due to there lack of training and the widespread belief / stereotype that they are thieves and cheats.
The 'Gypsies' are a group of people with an extremely rich culture. There performances at festivals and such attract many tourists who find there life styles unique and interesting. The reason this minority group is discriminated against so terribly is not due to being a bad group of people, but a misunderstood group of people. Throughout European society and time there had been and still is a serve lack of understanding about the 'Gypsies' which has lead to all the discrimination they have faced and are still facing today.
When most people think of 'Gypsies' they think of the stereotype 'Gypsy', a nomad, a thief, and uneducated. Though finding schools for 'Gypsies' can be hard there are 'Gypsy' children that attend school. Only a minuet percentage of the 'Gypsies' are nomadic.
