There are many writers like James Joyce, Patrick Kananach and Thomas Moore who use symbolism to convey and support indirect meaning in their writings. J. D. Salinger and F.

Scott Fitzgerald both use symbolism in similar ways. In both "The Catcher In The Rye" and "The Great Gatsby", the authors used symbolism to convey emotions and reality. In "The Catcher In The Rye", J. D. Salinger uses Holden's red hunting cap, the exhibits at the Museum of Natural History and "kings in the back row" as symbols whose meanings help tell the story. Holden's red hunting hat stands for Holden's disapproval of adult society and phonies.

Although, Holden and his hat are out of place in New York, he loves this hat because it demonstrates his difference and independence from other kids his age. He becomes more and more attached to his hat because he feels like a catcher in the rye when he wears the hat. Holden cannot let go of his hat, like he cannot let go of his childhood. The Museum of Natural History is used to signify Holden's fear of change. Holden enjoys looking at the mummies and the exhibits at the museum because they never change and are frozen in time. Holden realizes that he changes every time he goes back and sees the exhibits, but the exhibits do not change.

He wishes that his childhood world would last forever like his exhibits. Salinger also uses the setting of New York City as a symbol. Although Holden's mind, like the city is constantly changing, learning new things and finding new experiences, he is unable to let himself grow up. In chapter 4, the kings in a game of checkers are used to demonstrate Holden's child-like nature. Holden tells Stradlater that when Jane played checkers she always kept her kings in the back row because she like the way they looked there. Holden asks Stradlater to ask Jane if she still keeps all her kings in the back row.

This must be interesting to Holden because he talks about it throughout the novel. The row of kings also show how Holden can't separate his past from his present. Like Salinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses may symbols in "The Great Gatsby" to reveal the characters' emotions and values. The main and first symbol used is the green light on the end of Daisy's dock. Fitzgerald introduces Jay Gatsby at the end of chapter one as Gatsby stands with his "stretched out arms toward...

a single green light, minute and far away... " The green light on the other side of the water symbolizes Gatsby's desires, dreams and goals. The light, however, is far away and unreachable, like his goals and dreams. The green light conveys the reality that Gatsby will never get to be with Daisy and that she is not the one. Chapter two takes the reader through an area between West Egg and New York the author calls a valley of ashes.

This is an area used to dump garbage and industrial ashes. The valley of ashes represents places and people who the rich think are disposable. Myrtle and George Wilson are poor and they live in the valley of ashes. The rich Gatsby, Tom and Daisy, however, only pass through the valley of ashes. Above the valley of ashes stands the billboard of the eyes of Dr. T.

J. Eckleburg. The eyes suggest that someone, maybe God, is watching. Fitzgerald describes the gigantic eyes as looking .".. out of no face but instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistence nose. " The eyes are .".. dimmed a little by many painless days under rain and sun... " brooding over the valley of ashes.

In chapter eight George Wilson believes the eyes are the eyes of God. The eyes are also looking down at the city and at its materialism. Fitzgerald also uses colors for symbolism. The color white is used many times in the story. The author uses white to describe Gatsby's clothes and his mansion. The color white represents Gatsby's innocence and pure heart.

The color yellow is also used throughout the story as a symbol of corruption and death. The car that Gatsby drives was yellow and his yellow car killed Myrtle. The flower that Daisy is named after is white on the outside and yellow in the middle. Daisy seems innocent on the outside, but her real character is as corrupt and greedy as Tom's. Throughout "The Catcher In The Rye" and "The Great Gatsby", symbolism is used to paint mental pictures for the reader. The symbols used allow the reader to foresee the character's emotions, beliefs and values.

Ultimately, the authors' uses of symbols make both novels more interesting and unforgettable.
