The meaning of the title "Never To Forget" is very significant to the story of the Holocaust. The title simply means to forget what we know would not be human. It is very important that we never forget the Five Million Jews that lost their homes, property, freedom, dignity, and finally, their lives. We must always remember what happened to the Jews. Every time someone thinks of saying or doing something to a fellow human being we must remember the Holocaust.

We must never forget to insure this will never happen again. The book "Never To Forget" is Milton Meltzer's true story of the Holocaust. It tells the story of when over Five Million Jewish peoples were massacred. The book has no characters.

It only tells the straightforward account of the Jewish Holocaust. Meltzer writes the story of the Holocaust from an interesting viewpoint. Because he is a young 15 year old American Jew, watching the events of the war from afar, he brings a passion to the delivery of the historical information that makes it more engaging and powerful. The organization of the book into units according to chronology makes it easy to read as a whole, or a reader can use it to research a particular aspect of the Holocaust. The first unit is entitled "History of Hatred. " It describes the horrible conditions Jews had to endure prior to Hitler's Holocaust. Meltzer explains how Jews were enslaved by ancient Pharos, finally escaped and rose to become the major religion of that time.

After Jesus died on the cross, Jewish peoples were once again outcasts. It explains how laws against Jews prohibited them from being free and prosperous. The unit describes that in the period leading up to the Holocaust Jews were forced into ghettos, stripped of their human rights, and considered by the German government to be "sub-humans." The Second Unit is titled "Destruction of the Jews. " It describes the infamous "Night of Broken Glass. " The night when Nazi storm troopers attacked Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues across Germany and murdered close to 100. The unit describes the herding of Jewish peoples to concentration camps.

Meltzer vividly depicts the horrible acts of Adolf Hitler. Meltzer describes Hitler's "final solution" that ended in the gruesome deaths of millions of Jews. The third and final unit in the book "Never To Forget" is entitled "Spirit of Resistance. " Milton Meltzer vividly depicts the way Jews stayed true to themselves and their religion during their greatest struggle. He describes the brave acts of certain Jews and Gentile. Strong faith and hope is the only thing that sustained the Jews as a people. Nazi-German Persecution of Jews After Hitler invaded Poland, the Einsatzgruppen, or mobile killing units, entered with one purpose to kill as many civilians as possible, especially Jews.

There were four battalion-sized mobile killing units, totaling about 3, 000 men. They patrolled different zones of Eastern Europe and worked with regular armed forces. Historians estimate the units murdered 1. 5 million Jews by the end of the war. On November 13, 1935 Hitler introduced the Nuremberg Laws. They made anti-Semitism part of German legal code. Under the laws Jews were stripped of their political rights.

They were no longer citizens. Mixed marriages were prohibited, Jews could only live in houses marked for Jews, and they were denied the use of private phones. The Nuremberg Laws were not really changing or adding anything to what already was happening to the Jews. On September 21 1939 Hitler's Generals issued their plan for Poland's Jews.

The Jews would be removed from the villages and countryside and forced into inner-city ghettos, or segregated communities. A Council of Jewish Elders would administer the segregated communities. Later it was apparent the ghettos were only way stations to the death camps. By the time World War II was over, the dead included six million Jews killed specifically because they were Jewish. This collection of first-person accounts of the Holocaust serves as a timeless reminder of how Europe's Jews reacted to the threat of extermination, emphasizing the wide variety of resistance efforts. This book relayed a chilling, fact-filled account of the Holocaust.

Life for these people will never be the same. We need to examine ourselves and look at what happened to the Jews and hope, pray, and see that nothing like this happens again. It is hard to believe that it is possible to have another Holocaust but it isn't; however there are in fact cases of genocide still occurring today. We need to realize that we are all people, no matter what race we are. Life is too voluble to waste fighting. Let's live together in peace and harmony.
