Dear Journal: The reason for this entry is because my psychologist Dr. Martin told me it was a good and healthy way to express my feelings and emotions. I am currently under psychological and psychiatric treatment. I feel really depressed, anxious and a general sense of loss. My psychiatrist Dr. Gonzalez prescribed these medicines called Paxil and Xanax to help me with these feelings.

I was never like this before. We had rough times but things always seem to work out fine, until that horrible day. Now all I can think of is Why Me? ? Why my innocent child? It all began on a Wednesday morning at my sons school. Jerry, my son, is a very smart boy presently in the first grade.

He was just perfect, until that day. Jerry had been complaining the day before of a headache and neck pains. I thought he had probably slept in a wrong position or that I needed to get his eyes checked. I gave him Childrens Tylenol and he seemed to feel better.

The next morning it all changed. According to the teacher, Mr. Rodriguez just before lunch about four children started to feel sick. The kids seemed to have a fever and were complaining of nausea and headaches. The teacher sent all the kids to the office to contact their parents. As each parent picked up his or her child everyone assumed it was just a virus.

When I picked up Jerry I noticed he was really warm. He was also complaining of pains in his head and neck. I immediately took him home and gave him Childrens Tylenol and had him lie down and rest. Half an hour later I checked Jerry's temperature. It was higher than before, 103. 6. He was lethargic and wanted only to sleep.

I panicked. I did not know what to do. This did not look like a regular virus or cold. It was around 12: 00 noon when I called the pediatrician. Unfortunately they were out to lunch until 2: 00 p.

m. I had to leave my telephone number with the answering service. I remember seeing Jerry so helpless and immobile. I decided to put him in the bathtub and give him a cold bath to help lower the fever. I was so afraid he would have a seizure due to his high fever. I decided to give him more Tylenol because he was barely responding.

Around 1: 00 p. m. Dr. Geraldi called back.

I explained the symptoms and that his fever was at 104. 0. The doctor told me that it was probably this bad virus that was going around. He said that his office was full of kids with the same thing. Dr. Geraldi told me to give Jerry Motrin, instead of Tylenol, monitor the fever and to bring Jerry in the morning to see him. I felt much better once I talked to the doctor.

Since Jerry is my only child and this is the first time he has ever been sick. I am not experienced enough to know if this is just a virus or something more serious. I called my mother and asked if she could bring over some Motrin for Jerry's fever. I checked his fever from time to time but it was still the same. About 20 minutes later my mother arrived home with the Motrin.

I took his temperature again and it was higher, 104. 3. I did not know what to do. I gave Jerry the Motrin and my mother placed an ice pack on his head. I kept thinking this doesnt feel right.

He did not look good and thats when my mother said to me. He looks really bad, if I were you I would take him to the doctor now. As we were talking the telephone rings. It was the mother of one of the kids in my sons class. She told me that her daughter was in the hospital and asked how Jerry was feeling. I told her what his symptoms were.

She told me that I should take him to the hospital as soon as possible because apparently it was more than just a virus. After hanging up with her, I immediately gathered my things and checked on Jerry again. He looked terrible I had never seen my baby so helpless and sick before. I picked him up, covered him in a blanket and took him to Baptist hospital.

Once I got there things got worst. Jerry lost consciousness and his fever just kept increasing. The doctors at Baptist were not sure what was wrong. They suggested that I take him to Miami Childrens Hospital. Once I got to Miami Childrens Hospital I thought I was going to die of a heart attack. I lost all control and I just remember screaming for help.

I really thought my son was dying. What an awful, unexplainable feeling. Seeing your son drift away slowly in your arms. The doctors took Jerry and immediately ran some test.

I was left there to wait, alone, wondering about my sons fate. Seconds seemed like minutes and minutes like hours. After a while, the doctor walked towards me and gave me the news. He said Mrs. Casalduc we performed different types of tests. One of the tests we performed was a Spinal tap due to Jerry's symptoms.

Spinal tap what is that? This is a test in which a needle is inserted into an area in the lower back where fluid in the spinal canal is readily accessible for testing. The results of the test came back positive for Meningitis (Streptococcus Pneumoniae). So many thoughts went through my mind. Meningitis?

What is it exactly? Who? Why? After loosing my husband earlier this year to cancer, I did not think anything could be worse but my six year old with Meningitis. As my eyes filled with fear and tears. The doctor tried to explain what Meningitis was.

He also told me he needed to give Jerry an antibiotic for the Meningitis. However, this medicine called Gentamicin was oto toxic. I remember thinking oto what? He quickly explained what it meant and that there was a small chance that it could affect Jerry's hearing.

I remember the doctors voice fading in and out as we talked. I could not believe this happening. He left to begin the medication and told me once Jerry was stable he would let me see him. By that time all I wanted to do was see my son. An hour had gone by before the doctor said I could see Jerry.

He looked so helpless and vulnerable with tubes and monitors hooked up to him. Little by little he regained consciousness. We were in the hospital for a couple of days before Jerry was feeling better. He looked fine but something was not right. I remember calling his name and he would not respond until I touched him. Then he told me he could not hear me.

I almost fainted. Immediate...
