Estonia was found in 3500 BC when the ancient ancestors settled on the Baltic Sea in Northwestern Europe. It is surrounded by the Gulf of Finland on the North, Russia on the east, Latvia on the South, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Rica on the the west. Tallinn is the capital city, the largest city and most important port. Estonia covers an area of 45 227 square kilometers and has more than 1 500 small and large islands.

The biggest islands are Saaremaa Island and Hiiumaa Island. These islands separate the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. The mainland has a large coastline of 1 393 kilometers long. In the winter it usually stays below freezing from the middle of December to the late end of February. The rain and melting snow in the spring usually cause flooding and rivers that can sometimes be dangerous to people and houses. Industries produce very harmful pollution into the air, and water which is a major problem in Estonia. Almost 100 percent of the electricity people use is made thermal plants which burn fossil fuels.

These fuels have been proven by scientist to be one of the biggest and most harmful type of pollution. Also in Estonia, the sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide pollution is very high from the oil shale burning plants. In Northern Estonia the forests and several damaged due to the acid rain, so there is not very much animal life there. Scientists have also shown that because of all the pollution, children's health as been effected and more children are becoming sick. The soil, ground water, lakes and river are also harmed by all of the pollution too.

The population of Estonia in 2001 was 1 423 316. The northern part of the country has more people then any other areas and no one seems to know why. 74 percent of the population in Estonia live in cities and towns, not in the country. Almost one third of the people live in the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, on the northern coast. Other cities with many people are Tartu and Parnu.

Most of the Russian people that live in Estonia live in the city of Narva. Russian people make up about 29 percent of all the people in Estonia. The Luthern religion is followed by about 80 percent of the people. Christianity, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Muslim are other types of religion that people follow.

The languages spoken here are Estonian, Russian, Ukrainian and English. Believe it or not 100 percent of the adults in Estonia can properly read and write. The country thinks this is because education has been made compulsory (you have to go) starting at the age of 7 and ending at 16. The school children only have to go to school for 9 years instead of 12 like here in Canada. School are taught in two languages, Estonian and Russian. The oldest university is Tartu which was built in 1637 by King Gustav II of Sweden.

Folk songs are very important to the Estonian people and are sung for every day and for every occasion. Poems have also become very popular and many young children have memorized and can say many long and complicated poems. The most famous poems are Kristjan Jan Peterson which have been popular since 1901. It is a custom that one of his poems are read in almost every house, every day, sometimes in the morning, sometimes at bedtime. Ballet, opera, drama, symphonies, and orchestras are places people go for enjoyment. The main sports played in this country is basketball, and hockey.

Estonia suffered a lot of damage from World War II but has rebuilt most of what was ruined. The economy and crops have also improved since the war. The main crops that are grown now are grain such s barely, rye, oats, wheat, potatoes and flax. Since 49 percent of the land is forested, many people work in the forest industry.

Engineering, metalwork, machine building, mining of shale, and fishing are the main types of jobs people work at. The factories employ 33 percent of the people. The mining of shale is so popular that Estonia is the second worlds largest producer of it. Many people think that Estonia is a poor country but actually it is not. Most people have proper water, clothing and houses but for young families that have no jobs life is very hard. There is some medical care, childcare money and pensions for old people.

The country is still not comparable to Canada. For example there is 38 545 kilometers of unpaved roads and only 10 935 kilometers of paved roads. In Canada most of the roads are paved. Also in Canada, we have a very big army and navy but in Estonia they have only 4 370 troops and 250 navy men.

Estonia has many people in the republic. There are 105 members in the parliament called the Rilgikogu. There is an elected president and a chosen prime minister who is the head of the government. The republic rules all of the country.
