At first we meet Tom and his son who are a bit poor and live on boat. Their boat is taken by colonists and is planned to be shipped out and be used in the war. They are given a note to take to the congress to get the money for their taken boat. While Tom is trying to get the money his son joins the army because he is interested in the drums.

In order to keep his son safe, Tom has to join the army too. Tom does this and becomes a soldier. They are shipped out to war together and are joined with many other participants in the war. In the first battle, many people die and Tom and his son are running. They get jobs in a town and Tom and his son get in an argument about the war and his son runs off. Tom is left alone with his work and a British soldier walks in and takes Tom and another big, strong man outside.

They are to be carrying the fox in a British fox hunt. Tom survives, but the other one doesnt. His son is captured for stealing and is picked up by the British because of his talent with drumming. He disobeys and bites a British officer who 0 orders the he should be whipped.

They whip him on his feet until they are so bruised that he cant walk. Tom finds his son and rescues him, but two Indians are sent to get them. Tom kills those Indians and two more came by, but these were from a different tribe who wanted to kill the other Indians. Tom and them become friends and they stay with the Indians for a long time. Tom and his son are grown up and are now coming to the end of their journey of war. The colonists are winning the war and British are fleeing.

The British finally surrender and end the war. The British soldier that whipped Toms sons feet is in the same war at the end with Tom and they kill his son. He is left to deal with his sons death. Toms son goes off with his newborn baby and wife to live on a farm while Tom finds his old friend.
