In 1605 the English were just discovering the new country of America, and the Indians were just discovering the "pale face. " The Indians feared the English and the English feared the Indians, so of course a war broke out. Pocahontas single handily forced one of the few eras of peace between the Indians and the hated European colonist. A captain named John Smith and two of his troops were walking through the forest, when all of the sudden arrows shot out of the bushes and killed the two men. John Smith took up his gun and started shooting. He killed three or four of the fifteen Indians, but they backed him up to a river.

He fell in, and it was either let go of his gun or drown. So, he let go of the gun and accepted the help of the Indians. He was brought before Powhaton, the chief, and was questioned to no end. Then he was shown to a place setting and was fed like a king. He had no idea of what was about to happen. Powhaton's tribe had a bloody custom, when an enemy was taken captive he was fed then was beaten to death or if the man was lucky, somebody from the tribe would adopt him.

John Smith was fed, and then pushed down onto two rocks. The braves slowly raised their hatchets ready and willing to kill the pale faced trespasser. But Pocahontas who was watching from the trees; ran down and covered Smiths head with her own. She begged with her father asking if she could adopt him. Powhaton agreed but only if he would keep a close watch on him.

John Smith was very grateful to the princess for saving him. She was very curios about his country and life, and he in turn was also curios about the Indians and how they managed things. They took turns asking questions about one another. John liked being there but he also missed his life.

So he asked Pocahontas when he might be able to leave, she said never you belong to me. So John bribes her. Finally he gets to go to James town. He gave Pocahontas the gifts he promised here and in turn the Indians taught the English how to hunt, fish, and farm. As a result, the English who were starving had food. "John Smith's enthusiasm for the Indian princess was obvious not shared by every one, for in 1613, Pocahontas was kidnapped and taken to James town. " (Utley, 1982, p- 27) At this time she was about 17.

Governor Sir Thomas Dale saw Pocahontas as a great possession to use against the Indians. He would return her if Powhaton would give back all the English prisoners back. They spent a year bartering for Pocahontas. During that time, she started to get used to the English life style. She sometimes whore their stiff English clothes and shoes. She also started learning the language of the English.

But Pocahontas refused to change completely, so for freedom, she startled the stiff colonists by performing cartwheels nude in the town square. Although the colonist still feared her they helped her change and learn. The women picked out clothes and out fits for her to wear kind of like a doll. She did not mind being treated like a doll. In fact she was feeling quite at home with the English. Pocahontas started attending church.

She was very confused there because they said her god (Okee) wasn't god. The christens said that Okee was the devil. She really was concerned about all her Indians brothers. In 1614, she was baptized and named the Lady Rebecca. "She, under God was the instrument to preserve this colony from death, famine and utter confusion, " testified Captain John Smith as cited by Gardener, 1961, p. 165. John Rolfe a Calvinist, "Was taken by this beautiful unbelieving creature, " (Utley, 1971, p. 152). He began to tutor her. "John Rolfe was a widower and; although he has recovered from the loss of his beloved wife, he missed a woman's companion ship and he found himself thinking a lot about the Indian princess, " (Watson, 1995, p. 161).

He asked the church if he could marry Pocahontas. They said yes if he could get Powhaton's permission. Powhaton was so pleased about the idea of a little peace, said yes with his blessing. So Pocahontas and John Rolfe said their wedding vows in April of 1614. After their wedding, the Rolfe's decided to visit England. Pocahontas was amazed at all the people and buildings.

She was royalty, so she go to visit the queen. The queen really liked Pocahontas, so she invited her to stay for a while in the palace. She met all the lords and the ladies. In the mist of all the fun and festivities, she was sad. She was with the English and her husband, but someone special was missing. John Smith all of the sudden showed up where Pocahontas was staying.

Pocahontas thought that he was dead. All her old feelings came back, because he was a brother and she loved him. Smith could not stay long he was headed to the new colony in Bermuda, so their meeting was a short but sweet one. That is the last time Smith saw Pocahontas again.

The Record books do not give an exact date, but Pocahontas gave birth to a son. The birth occurred when Pocahontas and Rolfe was in London. The baby was christened Thomas Rolfe. Thomas was only a little one when Pocahontas heath suddenly took a plummet. The damp cold London air was taking its toll. Rolfe was getting worried so he booked a passage for three headed for Jamestown.

However Pocahontas would never set foot in America again, for she died of small pox in 1617. Pocahontas was only twenty-one years old, when she left Thomas in the care of John Rolfe. She single-handedly forced one of the few eras of peace between the Indians and the hated European colonist. "In the process she created a legend that endures to this day - a legend that if any thing understates the reality of this extraordinary young woman, " (Utley, 1982, p. 28) Pocahontas left the Indians with a since of pride and the English a since of belonging. She budded a great country and even at her young age sparked a friendship between the English and Indians.
