Mores Utopia is the representation of his humanist, rational ideas. He attempted to show us not necessarily the blue print, but rather the basis of an egalitarian society. This, near ideal, equality motivated society that More created was not (as it may be easily misconstrued) a society of perfect people. It was near ideal because; it was prepared with the notion that its population would not consist of infallible, perfect people.

It was created with the notion that people would want to succumb to their natural urges, and to allow them to do so within the limits of the law. The Utopias laws were set fourth to make morality the only rational way to conduct ones self. Also, to further indoctrinate the populace with this mindset they were taught to think rationally through education. With the understanding that people naturally served their own best interest, and by manipulating laws and other institutions (education, and religion) the Utopians (More) created an environment, where to fulfil ones best interest would in turn fulfil the best interest of the community as well. The Island of Utopia was heavily steeped in the ways of an egalitarian society. In order for More to extinguish the injustices that were seen elsewhere in the world (particularly England) Utopia was made to be as equal as possible.

Everything was divided equally among the people. The houses, the towns, the food rations, the amount of work during the days, and the choices of clothing were all the same. The physical structure of the island its self was almost equally distributed. As Raphael Hythloday explains, The island if the Utopians is two hundred miles across in the middle, where it is widest, and throughout most of the island it is not much narrower, but toward booth ends it narrows a bit. (53) While the areas of religion, scholastics, and the issue of slavery are all strong arguments leading to faults within the Utopian system, these minor glitches may have been over looked by More, because they seemed inevitable in any civilized society during Mores age. This quality of over all equity, is key in understanding the relationship of a perfect society consisting of imperfect people. People in general were not and are not perfect, and the people of Utopia were no different than anyone else.

To keep them from following any impulse that may have consumed them at any given moment the founders of Utopia devised a system with which everyone could be contained. First, the island was separated from the main land creating an environment free from the threat of contaminants of other nations and peoples. Though trade did occur, nothing came in or out of Utopia without the approval of the Utopians. This is also a provision of the physical island its self.

Hythloday said, The channels are known only to the Utopians themselves, and hence it hardly ever happens that a foreigner enters the bay without a Utopian pilot. (53) Through this means, the Utopians could regulate who and what came into their harbors. Physical bearers alone were not enough however to prevent corruption from seeping in and taking a hold of a people. In order to prevent any internal corruption of the people, the founders of Utopia set up a code of law, and an educational system with the sole intent to dictate and show the people how to live reasonably. Their laws in a nutshell, prevent idleness, and encourage pleasure among everyone. Preventing idleness took time away from arbitrary thought.

By doing this, the Utopians lacked the time to idly think on irrational, and hence immoral things. While it is true that one may think of these things at any given moment, it is much more likely to occur in idle hands then in a busy mind. Also, this prevention of idleness stopped boredom among the people. Boredom similarly to idleness causes its own faults.

Through boredom, comes the emergence of want of material possessions, and the need for amusement. The faults found in these activities are that they would create competition between the Utopians, and a market for useless goods, like that of England. The next issue for the imperfect people of utopia, was how their people would be indoctrinated with the knowledge of right and wrong. To prevent their people from acting as animals, the Utopian genesis of an education system immerged which could teach the people how to think rationally about their world, not only through childhood and adolescence, but also throughout their adulthood as well.

Then studied logic and astronomy but abhorred astrology (because it lacked rational explanation, not simply because of a religious dogma). Also, through their learning they discussed philosophy. These principles are of this sort: that the soul is immortal, and by the beneficence of G-d is born for happiness: that our virtues and good deeds will be rewarded after this life, and our crimes have punishments prepared for them. Though these are religious principles, the Utopians believe and grant them. (81) This philosophy also brought about another important aspect of Utopian reason, and that is the issue of pleasure. The pursuit of good virtues and good deeds, was not only rewarded in the after life, it was also looked upon as pleasurable to do during life. The Utopian augment for this is as follows, That no one could be so stupid as not to feel that he ought to pursue his own pleasure by hook or crook.

He would only be concerned not to sacrifice a greater pleasure for a lesser one and not to per sure one that would be requited by pain. For they think it would be truly insane to pursue virtue, which is harsh and difficult, and not only to banish the pleasures of life but even to seek out pain of your own accord, and to expect to get nothing out of it. (81) This philosophy finally hit upon the crux of the matter. Attaining pleasure is the goal of the Utopians, and the reason for their entire way of life. They see the only way to generate and preserve their life style of tranquility, peace and harmony is to find pleasures with which they themselves can only benefit.

The equal sharing of everything only helps to proliferate the pure benefit of one into the benefit of everyone. Allowing there to never be an imbalance of anything the Utopians maintain a perfect equilibrium which was shared jointly in by all. Mores Utopia presented a state of equilibrium, through which imperfect people could function through a perfect set of rules governed by reason. This egalitarian society thrived because of its very nature. By proliferating pleasures through those institutions of law and rational education, the Utopians were molded to think (reason) in terms of benefiting themselves by benefiting others in the community through virtue and good deeds. Thus perpetuating the cycles of seemingly perfect people through complete equality and proper motivation.
