Coming to St. Louis College of Pharmacy at the beginning of the year, I did not know what to expect. I wish I would have had some sort of insightful advice from a student who has Tested the Water. From my experiences here after the first semester, I know what I have gotten myself into, and would like to share my knowledge with incoming Freshman. The first piece of advice I would like to share with future students is to be prepared.

I tried during the summer to get ready for this school, not only financially, but in my mental state. I worked as hard as I could this summer at two jobs to make a nice little pile of money in my checking account, and I thought I had enough to carry my through this year, but now I think it might only carry me through the semester. If I would have known this, I would have pinched every penny that summer and would have been as frugal as possible. The other part of being prepared is getting ready mentally for entering college. The students have to be ready to leave parents, friends, and loved ones. Students need to be able to make new friends and more importantly find the homes that they desire.

If a freshman does not learn to deal with these variables they may be in for a short ride here at Stlcop. The second bit of knowledge I want to let incoming freshman know about is to learn their limits ASAP. A good way to view this college is to work hard for six years of your life and reap the benefits later in life. A Ph. D. in pharmacy is a very reputable degree and this school is very prestigious school to get it at.

Many freshmen all over the country are away from home for the first time without anybody looking over their shoulders, guiding them. Some students get carried away with alcohol and socializing. At other schools, this might not be a problem because there is room for error. Stlcop is different.

There is a much thinner line for students to walk here than at other schools. Enrollment here is very small, and thus students here get much more attention with grades so it is much more difficult. Since we have more personalized classes the administration expects us to learn more quickly than bigger schools students. The last piece of advice I can give a freshman here at Stlcop is to be careful in St. Louis.

Many people here come from small towns and small high schools and havent lived in big cities. I, myself, was born and raised in a small town and am still getting used to living here in St. Louis. I have done a few very brave things here already that I look back that as myself why I did that. There are some bad people in this town and are just waiting for a rich college kid to come walking their way. There have been a few incidents this year where student almost had bad things happen to them, and last year I knew some people that did have bad things happen to them.

Girls, especially, should heed my warning and buy some sort of self-defense such as mace or pepper spray. This town has bad people in it that are capable of bad things, but if you go around things in the right manner, those bad things will not happen. This is the advice from a student that has been here for one semester, and hopefully many more. I know that I have not experienced everything that everybody will come across, but now I feel a little wiser about living in the greater St. Louis area. I know that when I was an incoming freshman I would have liked to have some good advice, such as this.

I would like to share all of my knowledge so that freshman will be a little more confident and wise when they get here for the first time.
