There is a lot of disagreement in the world about euthanasia, and whether it is morally permissible or not. As you read through this paper, you will see opinions on euthanasia from two different points of view. There will be arguments for, and against both of them. Next, I will continue the paper by letting you know how I feel about these two points of view. At the end, I will bring you to a conclusion by letting you know exactly where I stand when it comes to people asking other people to kill them, to bring an end to their misery. An Ethical Egoist believes that whatever act brings an individual the most net intrinsic good is the act that they are morally obligated to carry out.

They feel that whatever is going to benefit their self-interest the most is the right thing to do. That is the question we are all trying to answer. When it comes to euthanasia, there isnt just one person involved in doing an act, there are two, the one who chooses that he or she wants to die, and the one who chooses to help carry out this persons wishes. First off, an Ethical Egoistic person who wants to die has to decide whether prolonging their life in pain or having someone else end it will bring them the most net intrinsic good. If they decide that ending their life will be better for their self, then and only then can the next step begin. The next step is to find someone who is willing to kill them.

This person has to ask their self something too. They have to decide if it is in their best self-interest to end the persons life. Will they feel guilt the rest of their life for doing it, or do they think it will make them happy to know they put this person out of their unbearable misery. Once they truly believe it will make them more happy to see this persons misery end than to let them go on suffering, then and only then does the Ethical Egoist say that the euthanasia of that person should be carried out.

Another moral point of view we will look at is the Rule Utilitarianism's point of view. Rule Utilitarianistic person believes that an act is morally right if and only if it is permitted by a correct moral rule for the society. They believe that a rule is correct for a society if and only if it has a higher utility value for the society than any alternative rule. The rule must produce the most net intrinsic good for the society following the particular rule. In our society here in the United States, euthanasia is illegal. This means that Rule Utilitarianistic people either believe that outlawing euthanasia creates the most net intrinsic good, or that the law should be abolished or changed to create the most net intrinsic good for our society.

Rule Utilitarianistic people who believe the laws concerning euthanasia should be changed have a lot of evidence to support their beliefs. One argument is that it would get rid of the weak and dieing people. This would help the society by creating room in our hospitals for people who need treatment, and will eventually recover. It would also lower taxes for the rest of society, because a lot of the people who are in the hospitals with terminal illnesses stay there for months and even years. After a while, their insurance money runs out, and the government is left with paying the bills for these people. In the long run, the rest of the people in the society end up paying for their hospital stays, which 99 % of the time end with death anyway.

So, the Rule Utilitarianistic person would say, why not speed up the process their dieing, when it would benefit the rest of society in such a dramatic way. I personally dont agree with either the Ethical Egoism or the Real Utilitarianism points of view. If I did have to choose one over the other, I would choose the Real Utilitarianism point of view. I feel that the Ethical Egoism point of view is to selfish. Everything about it is selfish. I feel that there are too many selfish people in our society to except it.

When someone finds out that someone close to them is going to die soon, the first thing they ask God is why should that person should die, especially when its someone who is a very humble and noble person. There are way too many people who dont care enough about the people who love them, and still need time to except that their loved one is dieing, and to find peace within themselves and with God. When people know they dont have long to live and its going to be a painful death, its a drastic time in their life. When people get is these situations, sometimes they dont make the good choices that they would normally make.

The reason I think Real Utilitarianism is a better point of view, is because it puts more emphasis on other people and not just the individual who is dieing and the person who may or may not choose to end their misery. I dont feel that we should kill people just to save the rest of society money, but I do feel that there are other people who should considered before someone chooses to shorten their life. They should consider their relatives and other loved ones. I know that if one of my close friends or loved ones was about to die that I would want to make sure they knew I loved them, and how much I will miss them. I would be very upset with them if they didnt give me my chance to say my goodbyes to them. I think that the person who was dieing would die much more peacefully if they knew that all their loved ones excepted their upcoming death with sadness, but still ready to move on in life.

Death is something we all have to deal with. Many people deal with it in different ways. Everyone hopes to die a pain free death, but many dont. I feel that they should realize that they arent the only ones suffering. Everyone who is close to them suffers too. I believe God knows when it is our time to die, and he will take us away from this world when we are ready.

If someone dies after a long suffering, maybe its because they still have something here on earth that isnt resolved. I feel that they should look at this time as extra time given to them by God to resolve their problems with other people and to become at peace with the whole world. After that, I believe that they will be feeling ready to die, and God will soon take them. My personal feeling about euthanasia is that it is wrong. People should take advantage of every moment that God gives them here on earth, and make the best of it, even if it is a time of intense suffering.
