Other things that can aid in your curing of insomnia include making sure your sleeping environment is dark and comfortable, avoid caffeine late in the day, avoid alcohol (even though alcohol is a depressant, it can still affect how well you sleep), and try not to take sleeping pills every night, unless specifically instructed by your doctor (U. of Mich. ). Also, make sure anything important that needs to be done that can cause you worry is either done before you sleep, or plan out what needs to be done the next day well enough so that your mind will not have to continually dwell over it. If these things do not help cure your insomnia, then you may need to take drugs that are prescribed by your doctor. Zolpidem, which is manufactured under the brand name Ambien, is a CNS depressant.

Other drugs like Ambien (brand names in parentheses): flurazepam (Damage), quazepam (Doral), triazolam (Halcion), estazolam (Pro Som), and temazepam (Restore) are sometimes prescribed for treatment of insomnia (Gale). On occasion, your doctor may prescribe a drug not originally intended as a sleep drug. Some anti-depressant drugs work well as sleep aids. One example is Trazodone. This drug was originally developed as an anti-depressant, but doctors found that it did not work so well in that capacity. With all prescription drugs, you must read any information on the label or on any pamphlets the doctor or pharmacist gives you. As is the case with any drug, there are potential side effects and drug interaction problems, and you should only take the drug as often as instructed. Insomnia is a very bad condition that affects many people. However, over half of the people who suffer from insomnia do not get diagnosed, and therefore do not get treated. Having trouble sleeping once every great while is not a big problem, but if this becomes a regular occurrence, you need to be proactive in curing your insomnia.
